I used one of those watch strap compasses while exploring New York. Not really accurate, but enough to tell you which way is "uptown" and stop you inadvertently wandering into an area not recommended for tourists.

Wifey harvested a bag of what she thought were elderberries. At first glance I was taken in, until I saw a leaf that had come along. They were dogwood berries.

I'm guessing that because you want it waterproof, that you are intending to use it for wet, not freezing conditions? I have one that I have never worn that I am considering waterproofing.
I think a few folk here have tried this, so I too would like to know if any of them worked out.

There are a couple of the patrol packs in this photo. You can see the way the shelterhalf/poncho was rolled up under the lid and folded down each side held in place by the leather straps.

Ah! The M53 Stridssekk. Had no idea they had become rare. Mine always seems too small. If you are going to make one, consider making it a bit larger.
