Both are good but I’d say the TBS has the edge. The fixed bail hangs better and the stamped measurements help when measuring fluids these features make it better than the Pathfinder.
Well quite a few hikers use their walking poles to prop up a tarp - there’s no extra weight here as they are carrying them anyway so it’s a good system. Tarps aren’t always that light and you might need a bivi bag too. When you add the weight together it might be more than a lightweight tent. My...
Have you tried the micro spikes much on rock covered in verglas? We issue crampons to our MRTs but I was wondering if micro spikes might be better in some conditions.
The fabric is water resistant but not waterproof.
Any generic dry bag(s) will fit inside or just get put in dry bags the stuff that needs waterproofing.
The Berghaus side pouches that fit the Munro (and Cyclops Roc) are quite hard to find and aren’t readily available. The best place seems to be...
They do help a bit with stability and having the rucksack snug. Loosen off all the straps then tension upwards from the waist strap finishing with the shoulder straps to get a nice fit.
I had one of their SAS Smocks in Egyptian cotton - similar to Ventile IIRC. I sold it eventually as it was too big (even though technically my size). The company were very good for custom builds, I had some extra plastic d rings added in the pockets for clipping gear to and you could get...
RAF MRTs & military aircrew carry a ‘Day & Night’ flare. Night (flame) indicates position and Day (orange smoke) gives wind direction / position. Civ MRTs use something similar (can’t remember exactly and it might vary between teams). RAF MRTs got rid of ground illuminating and parachute flares...
I’ve a very similar AA pack. I’m a MRT volunteer and my pack has had a pretty hard life for the last 10+ years I’ve had it. You got a very good score, I’m sure it will serve you very well for a long time.
Back size on Berghaus was (is?) 1-4 with 1 being the smallest. Based on your height I’d say you need a size 2. I’m presuming some people have long legs and a short body hence the old information. I think in reality the overall height is more important. I used Berghaus packs for about 35 years, a...
Don’t forget your local car boot sale. Over the years I’ve picked up lots of amazing gear for very little. You do need to go regularly and early in the morning (be there for 0700!) but it’s worth the effort. Don’t expect to just pick up what you need, just be open to surprises. I recently got a...
I think our interpretation of advanced differs perhaps. I tend to think of advanced as new and harder skills focused; but I accept folk may wish to push themselves physically and mentally too.
As a service person I wouldn’t be paying for fitness tests or endurance training; I get enough of...
Well if you look at the syllabus offered by reputable companies like Woodlore or Frontier Bushcraft their more ‘advanced’ courses steps up the learning to what would be considered harder skills. The classic example would be bow drill on a ‘basic’ course and hand drill on a ‘intermediate’ or...
If you’re just walking low level OS 1:50k or 1:25k are appropriate. If you’re going into the Cullin then the Harvey’s 1:40k is a good option. Essentially the level of detail is too little on the 1:50k and too much on the 1:25k. The colour shading is better on the Harvey’s but note that the...
Try spitting on your hands so you get more friction and open your hands at the top so the fleshy lower part of your palm is the only bit in contact with the drill.
Yes - I’ve successfully hand drilled into a piece of Chaga. It takes couple of days to build up the muscle memory and so you don’t trash your hands. It’s the only thing I’ve successfully used for hand drill.
