    What are you currently reading?

Something a bit different for me - just finished a brief history of time. Worryingly, I think I understood it!

You owning stuff Vs Stuff Owning You.

I would put myself on the more minimalist end of the scale. I think having lived in a house where my mum would save everything (Inc. The cardboard tubes from bog rolls for making blue Peter style stuff in the school holidays- I thought it was embarrassing but all my mates on the street loved...

    What are you preserving?

Looks amazing! I bet the smell is unreal. Very, very useful dried spice. Do you save the seed too?

    Sweetcorn luxury

Is that the same as corn smut? Noticed a few folk have seen that so far this year

    What are you preserving?

Last year's crab apple vodka went down so well that me and a couple of mates have chipped in to creat a monster batch with a big 5 litre kilner jar. The basic recipe is 1kg sugar, 3 litres of vodka and as many apples as you dare fit in the jar! Chopped in half you can pop out the seeds with a...

    The “Isn't Life Great” thread

Wednesday night- had a chat with with a very vocal owl, which lead us to find a nice chicken of the woods fungi. I don't for a minute believe that it wasn't coincidence, but what a cool coincidence.

    What are you preserving?

I've just finished drying a load of spearmint and yarrow for tea. Just a low oven with the door cracked, stems and all on a perforated pizza tray or cooling rack. Once dried the stems can be stripped into a bowl. fresh spearmint Fresh yarrow Stripped stems Dried spearmint Dried yarrow It's...

What do you not eat that therefore makes you "weird"?

When you say pork, does that include bacon?

What do you not eat that therefore makes you "weird"?

Cucumbers. Don't mind em in a gin, the flavour of the juice is fine but actually eating cucumber turns me. Radishes too, I've tried to like them but I just can't stand them. I'm sure there's more that I can't quite think of.

    Queer smell

A couple of things that spring to mind 1. Not the smell you describe but there are a few stinkhorn fungi around at the moment and they have a particularly strong smell 2. Possibly some cheeky cannabis plants

    What are you preserving?

Brilliant BR. I need me one of those funnels- is it just a kilner jam funnel or something a bit more specialised?

    What are you preserving?

Fruit seems to be everywhere we look at the moment- the rowan berries are just about in season, the plums are well in. I managed another session on the bilberries and had yet another crack at the fruit leather, although these two required a longer drying time. The dark one is rowan, bilberry...

    What are you preserving?

There's been a glut of bilberries recently and a mate has been having a big harvest of raspberries from his garden too. I really fancied making a fruit leather but I knew it wouldn't work with these fruits as they are low in pectin. Luckily a rummage through the freezer found a large tub of...

    What are you preserving?

Brilliant sounds like we've all been at it :) @wookii never had the pleasure of mulberries. Probably due to the pectin content? @TeeDee any chance of a recipe/guide? Sounds great!

    What are you preserving?

Part of my personal skills development this year was to try and learn more about preserving, especially wild foods. The last couple of years has seen me concentrate on my foraging skills more and more, and it's great to find wild edibles, but so often they are fleeting harvests, and once picked...
