French government expected to issue all citizens with survival manual

Indeed, but realistically, what are you going to do with it? As I say on social media regularly, I cover 160m to 70cm, legally, at home. It should keep working in many/most circumstances where I'm still able to operate it all, and on a good day I can speak to a random person half a world away...

Which is where you get into what "community" actually means. I'm tempted towards the belief that it's a lot closer to being a synonym for "tribe" than many in a functional, first world society are comfortable with.

This. But it is very much contrary to credo of many, I'd say most, people who call themselves 'preppers'.

    Shelf stable protein

Maybe I'm a bit less meticulous than others but I'd leave virtually anything, bar perhaps fish, that had been prepped and packaged in lunch bag (or whatever) for a day/length of a shift. I mean sliced bread isn't exactly renown for its longevity, nor ham salad, but you'll find salad sandwiches...

French government expected to issue all citizens with survival manual

There comes a point at which it is difficult to hide and in terms of eating well vice not, it's really not that long before it's evident. I mean, it's not even like you need a total societal collapse... But we're probably getting beyond the sensible scope of any likely "emergency" anyway.

French government expected to issue all citizens with survival manual

I was considering hoarding more from the perspective of, for instance, a situation where rationing exists and to hoard becomes an offence or even simply a social faux-pas than just as a behaviour. My other half will testify to the fact that despite owning two houses and a reasonably sized shed...

French government expected to issue all citizens with survival manual

On being prepared in general, I don't doubt that there are many here who could close the door of their house and not come out for a fair while, to no ill effect. And many who could get by on a long term basis if left to their own devices. The biggest issue, as I see it anyhow, is that you're...

My Dad always used to claim it was cheaper to eat out in Hong Kong than to self cater. That would have been mid to late Eighties.

I read it, assume whatever you want to, its if little consequence to me. If you don't know what you want for lunch, you're beyond my help.

I'd get a vacuum sealer and do up my own. You're not looking to keep stuff for too long.

They're knocking out the same sort of booklet as the UK did in '04 after the Civil Contingencies Act. For any & all occurrences - Gardez 3 jours de nourriture et d'eau dans votre cuisine. Ayez à disposition une lampe de poche, une radio et des piles de rechange. Restez chez vous et attendez...

    Best bushcraft trousers?

I love real US M65s, particularly if you can get a set of the '50's vintage sidehook braces to hold them up! The winter liners make them extremely adaptable too. Downside is that they're difficult to dry if properly soaked, but I don't wade much.

    Bergen side pockets Olive green/DPM

If I'm permitted to advertise, there's a page on Facebook titled W.A.P Army Combat Camo - The owner usually has side pouches and is not at all difficult to pay. Not my site, but I've dealt with them a quite a few times and always been happy.

    Ration packs

I'd never go for freeze dried from any source if I had the choice, but I agree with you insofar as there is better out there than military rations. The appeal of ration packs, for me at least, was that they could be obtained for the price of a few pints for the chap whose Bedford they fell off...

    Ration packs

Steve1989MRE has a lot to answer for, he's probably single handedly responsible for something close to doubling the price of ex-military (and related) food items. I met a couple of US youngsters while I was traveling over Christmas, kids who could not be further away from any interest in...

    Wool Blanket

I have two of the old grey British army blankets, anyone who's ever made a bedroll will be familiar. They're thinner/lighter than most and it really does take two for anything other than summer. The price was right though.
