    Branston pickle (sort of).

kinda working off the assumption that sometimes the excise people just charge duty on anything arriving in the UK from the EU. The odd thing is it seems to go the other way too, I'd sent Christmas presents to France, one of which was charged the rest were not. The person I sent it to appealed...

    Branston pickle (sort of).

Northern Ireland... Still in single market & customs union, so I shouldn't be paying regardless of value.

    Branston pickle (sort of).

I shouldn't have to pay duty from the EU, in reality it seems to be a bit of a lottery as to whether I do or not. Same on the outbound, sometimes the recipients get asked, sometimes they don't. There appears to be little rhyme or reason to it.

    Ex Military Beware

I met the SLR, just. But there was no wood involved. The L42 now, that was woody.

    Ex Military Beware

I can't see it applying to infanteers TBH, at least not in role. But there are plenty of trades in CS & CSS arms (as were) which do not actually require the level of physical ability that are expected in "normal" regular/reserve service. On the other hand... It ain't what people signed up for...

    Branston pickle (sort of).

I actually have Branston from these folks. The containers are quite robust, but I'd bag or cling film them if they're going in a pack.

    Branston pickle (sort of).

There is a little bar/bistro in Nanterre, Paris which I visit (maybe) one a year. The boss there (who is in 7/7/365) produces a jar of Branston when a British/Irish customer orders a croque monsieur and with a little giggle pops a spoonful onto their plate with the care and delicacy of a...

    Show us your watches

That's actually based off the Gen.2, the one that replaced mine. It's a nicer watch in most respects (I have one of them too!). I like the Gen.1 because it's smaller.

    Show us your watches

Pulsar Gen 1 chrono. Noughties to early Twenty Tens I think. Came to me with smashed crystal, bent hands and some nasty gouges on the case. It's still not 100% the hour hand isn't quite flat, but as I'm never likely to sell it, it'll do!

    Has anyone actually made erbswurst?

Not from the late lamented Knorr tablets, but from scratch? I did a quick search, but a prolific user who likes the stuff enough to have it as his username is skewing the results a bit! :D Long story short, I've fancied trying it for a while. I order a freezer load from a local butcher every...

Scammer banned - knives to Norther Ireland

If you haven't met a dealer/private seller who sells "mainland only" yet you've been extremely lucky.

Scammer banned - knives to Norther Ireland

This is getting quite common unfortunately. People from here, and increasingly people pretending to be from here offer low to mid priced goods for sale to the whole UK by various means and then 'ghost' the buyer. Geography, NI's history and factors like the lack of a county court system here (in...

Bushcraft and homesteading skills in WW3

Late to the party having been on hols, but Bushcraft skills? Realistically, nope. Not going to help much. Maybe for the Highlanders, but for most of us, small islands & lots of people. You are NOT going to 'live off the land'. On the other hand, at least partially due to being interested in...

Plates - what plate/ bowl do you use when camping?

I tend to use military mess kits, issue and otherwise. My favourites are the crusader, French mess tins, Swedish mess set (the military "trangia") or, on occasion the frypan from a model 27 civvy Trangia (I have two of the pans on mine).

    Strange Food ideas.

One that I have difficulty getting people on board with, and I've mentioned it here before, is curry porridge. Fry off an onion, bit of garlic, ginger, chillies or whatever you fancy add a masala and cook the rawness off it, then hoof in your oats and water and cook as you would for 'normal'...

    Poncho liner

I have a very aged American one (long before they started calling them 'woobies') and honestly it's one of the most used pieces of kit I ever bought, for a princely £3 at the end of the first War & Peace show I ever visited. WIth the poncho, everything from a British summertime swag to a cloth...

You could apply the same logic to motor vehicle or firearm use, and likely get similar results!

    European centric ?

A heck of a lot, and some real wild game. That's kinda my point, we have "bushcraft" as a hobby, a compromise, that allows people on small, comparatively crowded islands to do things that people who live elsewhere do routinely, almost as part of day to day life still. It's a generalisation of...

    European centric ?

My experience of France is that you don't find many buscrafters per se, but you'll find people with a 'bushcraft' skill set in comparatively greater numbers than you do here. Without staying too far into the political, they have a minor party, LMR (Le Mouvement de la Ruralité) which while almost...
