    Why a folding knife

    Maybe for concealment?

Sickle type knife for foraging herbs

The kind of knife you're after is usually called a hawkbill or pruning knife. Rough Rider, Victorinox and Arthur Wright make versions of it, as a few examples. I can't make a specific recommendation but the unbranded piece of junk pruning knife I have is genuinely useful for certain tasks.

    Magpies eating walnuts

I like the way it held the nut under its foot while it cracked into it. I know they do that with carrion that they're tearing at too and maybe its nutcracking behaviour is an extension of egg eating but even so it seemed outside the usual remit.

    Magpies eating walnuts

Anyone else witnessed this before? 2 things struck me as notable : 1. The magpie dug into the lawn to retrieve a walnut a squirrel had put there. It obviously had an idea of what to look for and how to find it. 2. The magpie then hammered away at the walnut like a woodpecker which I wasn't...

    External DVD fail

SSDs need powering up occasionally to retain their memory, so if you're thinking of very long term storage such as leaving it in the loft for decades then they may not be ideal.

    Big / Full size axes

I use a big Elwell for splitting wood, though admittedly I try to use a smaller one if I can get away with it. Sometimes a big log needs a big axe. My dad still uses a splitting maul too I think.

    Deck of Cards -Plants

Fair comment. I've no doubt there are 52 useful plants in the British Isles but admittedly they might not group up evenly in the way I suggested.

    Deck of Cards -Plants

I should think you could do a whole deck with just plants and maybe divide them into 4 suits based on land type - woodland, coast, heath and grassland for example?

Giving and taking commissions - risks and mitigation

I can't speak for knifemaking but in other fields of design the worst clients are the ones who don't really know what they want and basically change the goalposts every 5 minutes or wait until they see a finished product and still don't know what they do want but decide they don't want that...

    Plans for 2026

I'd like to get fitter. Nothing groundbreaking, just back to where I was a few years ago.

2026 market predictions (and other werewolf related activities)

I find silver a more interesting case because historically it's been up and down like a yoyo where gold generally goes up and barely goes down, like a ratchet. Years ago I assumed that silver should be going up due to the afforementioned industrial applications but it carried on like a yoyo...

    Tea

Tea has always been the drink offered at work and offered by my parents who brew it to the point it'll tan leather. Hence I've rarely made it for years, preferring coffee instead. Caff before noon and decaf after, like some kind of gremlin. However, this has almost brought me full circle because...

    Yew wood

I just scored a pretty big lump of yew this evening, dead and seasoned on the tree. It feels like Christmas! That said, NZ has some beautiful woods that would cost the Earth here.

In bed with flu. Not entirely idle, I’ve been burning photos to CD like it’s 2005

    Any gamers on here?

https://ebay.us/m/o2T7kl This one. Although it's called the R40S the only difference is the case shape. I just went with the seller with the best rating. Most of the NES, SNES, Megadrive 1 & 2, Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance games. A lot of N64 but probably not all. There's a...
