    Wild camping dartmoor threatened again

You've edited your post to add a curious last comment, I assume you are suggesting people tend to get 'brainwashed' at university and emerge as liberal animal rights/climate activists? I was rather too busy studying naval architecture to be be brainwashed, or rather as hinted at in my previous...

    Wild camping dartmoor threatened again

Possibly, on the other hand possibly not. I come from a family heavily involved in organic farming, a sibling is world famous in regenerative agriculture, and I practise self-sufficiency from a C17th house made of oak trees, mud and hazel sticks and off grid apart from a cold tap above a Belfast...

    Wild camping dartmoor threatened again

On the other hand, why should anyone have the right to 'own' land and prevent others from accessing it? A true nutjob concept! Especially given that the majority of the English countryside is owned by people unfit to own and manage land. Food crops sprayed with poisons toxic to humans and...

Fantastic news, and hopefully it will add to the momentum and pressure to extend access rights to much more of England.

    Cheapest produced jerky ?

A lot of the commercial stuff has nitrites in it- entirely unnecessary, presumably the manufacturers think bowel cancer is fun.

    Chimney Sweeping.

Nice tile work! And well done for getting on and doing it. I know a lot of people who heat with wood as their primary source of warmth and sweep their own chimneys, including two millionaires (one retired and one working), there's a satisfaction to being self reliant.

    My Trangia Reunion

They do need care in use, like any of the Trangia pans they can warp if overheated. It's the price to pay for lightweight kit though I suppose.

    My Trangia Reunion

They are very durable, even once dented and battered. Two- or even three- ply cooking vessels are nothing new. Most quality stainless steel domestic cookware is tri-ply, stainless outside, aluminium core for good conductivity all around the pot, and stainless inner. Sometimes with an...

    My Trangia Reunion

No, nothing to degrade, pure alcohol plus a bitterant so you can't neck it. You could preserve things in it.

    My Trangia Reunion

Even cheaper straight from the manufacturer, free delivery too. No purple dye to breathe in when it burns, or to possibly clog burner jets. UK meths has been plant-derived alcohol plus a bitterant plus a purple dye since the methanol was removed after an EU ruling in 2013. Bioethanol is...

    Ra-Ra-Rasputin.. Future Predictions.

Speak for youself, I'm looking forward to choosing the colour of my lightsabre. On a serious note I hope there will be advanced healthcare robots to deal with the ever-incresing mental health problems caused by social media, artificial intelligence, lack of purpose/belonging/community, and...

    Ra-Ra-Rasputin.. Future Predictions.

Everybody sees the light, stops chasing the next big thing and lives happily in close-knit communities, close to nature, growing food and rearing livestock, and all the useful peripheral activities which support those fundamental two, using practical skills and natural materials? Nah, it'll be...

The 'I've found a bargain' thread

I was aiming to point out Ikea's rebranded Eneloops are much cheaper than buying Panasonic branded Eneloops, not the Amazon basics.

The 'I've found a bargain' thread

Ikea 'Ladda' batteries are genuine Panasonic Eneloops in a different wrapper, and much cheaper! £5 for 4 1900mah AAs. My understanding is the lower capacity versions are a much better buy- vastly more recharge cycles, and they hold their capacity well. The higher capacity Ni-MH's loose a lot of...

    Wild camping dartmoor threatened again

They are pretty tough, I've spend a lot of time declogging them. Given the amount of rubbish mowers pick up at the best of times (barbed wire, clothing, plastic, miles of baler twine- and all manner of things blow onto even the best kept fields!) some camping debris really isn't going to make a...

    Wild camping dartmoor threatened again

I don't think there's much of a risk there. I assume camping would be on meadow/pasture, woodland and odd corners, not on arable. As an aside, only a tiny percentage of combines in the UK have metal detectors. I'd be more worried about a tactical ultralight paracord bracelet choking a cow.

    Outhaus canvas tarp

Just noticed the hammock question. I'd say 10oz, 12oz would be very tough if weight isn't an issue.

    Outhaus canvas tarp

The Thornhill Ultraheavy 3x3m tarps are 8oz, 12oz once waxed. I would think the 8oz ready waxed material would be adequate for smaller tarps, this is Barbour jacket material to give you an idea. 12-14oz you're into big Ridge tent territory (think Icelandic Scout tents) and above you're...
