Planning a Wild Camp in Dartmoor - Sleeping Gear Questions!

Mordor There is evil there that does not sleep, the very air is a poisonous fume! Dartmor Camp getting visited in the dead of night by nosy flatulent sheep! There is no Mereworth in LOTRs.

    European centric ?

We once did, and it was good, but it very much relies upon a much smaller pool of experienced people, generally living in the place, to carry the conversation. Even in the forum heyday it was often the case that those with that kind of experience were too busy living it to spend much time...

Locating the tent is also important, hollows might shelter from wind but tend to collect cool air when the wind isn’t blowing. Cold air tends to flow like water off the high ground at night.

Planning a Wild Camp in Dartmoor - Sleeping Gear Questions!

@Ethan Hodge I know Dartmoor is the go to place for wild camping in England, but you say you are based in Scotland, which has the right to wild camp almost everywhere. Dartmoor is a heck of a long way for a first time trip. Not suggesting not to come! Just suggesting that if the opportunity...

    Pull saws

I have a Laplander and a Silky Big Boy. When away from home, they get used for cutting that wood which I need to cut. I do like a made on site bucksaw for big firewood, but the folding saw packs easier and deploys faster. I love my Japanese carpentry saws. Have about 10 of assorted patterns...

Planning a Wild Camp in Dartmoor - Sleeping Gear Questions!

Good point. The use of multiple VPNs used by itself to be enough to know someone was up to no good, but recent events in the UK have made that much less of an indicator. However, I have edited the original post. Let’s see where it goes.

Planning a Wild Camp in Dartmoor - Sleeping Gear Questions!

Can you clarify, when are you planning to go on this camping trip? You make it sound like you are planning to go soon, as in late October or November, but then ask about sleeping bags for summer (twice). In a tent, with a basic insulation mat, a 3 season bag should be fine in summer. Not what...

My On The Bench Today Thread

I did a couple of removable scale knives a few years ago. Used 3mm dowel pins for initial alignment. Drilled and reamed through holes in handle and blade. Needed to lap holes back to size after heat treatment as I didn’t have a carbide reamer the right size. Handles held by two pairs of...

My On The Bench Today Thread

:beerchug: Looking good! It’s always nice to watch stuff progressing Looks like two sets of bolts glued with cyanoacrylate and one set with epoxy. Is that right? If so, what is your decision maker for using one vs the other? Same glue under the scales too? Also, I could have sworn it was...

    Kukri, Newton billhook alternative

Sounds like the first Condir Parang I saw. Like this one?? https://heinnie.com/condor-parang-machete/ Mary, This? https://heinnie.com/martindale-golok/ Or this? https://heinnie.com/martindale-paratrooper/

    Kukri, Newton billhook alternative

Glad to hear you get on with a golok. It sounds very different to the Martindale goloks that I have encountered, which were thick edged, heavy bladed, with uncomfortable handles with insufficient drop. When Bardster reground some goloks for better cutting for a jungle trip, the edges quickly...

    Kukri, Newton billhook alternative

Not a kukri, but I can recommend the Condor Bushcraft Parang Machete https://heinnie.com/condor-bushcraft-parang-machete I have the shorter and discontinued Eco Parang, but the slightly longer blade of the Bushcraft Parang is no bad thing. Mine needed the handle reshaped to fit me, but I think...

The app I am talking about is from this source: https://www.patientaccess.com/ Regardless of whether my parents turned off learning, which might have been a fair comment 15-20 years ago, I find that particular one a royal PITA to use on their behalf when visiting.

As a slight tangent thought. As I understand it now, the government is proposing that the digital id would not be required by retired people, it would only be required for people in work or applying for work. A concern is that when new technology (that offers convenience benefits to some)...

Ironically, just this last week my mum was talking to me about a friend who volunteers with her to maintain an arboretum on a school’s grounds. She was trying to get everyone DBS checked. This chap has had rather a rough few years, work wise, and doesn’t drive, nor does he have a current...

I was wondering about the tracking aspect. Without doing research it occurred to me that right now, if the government wish to know about someone, they must collate data from many sources. Phone, credit and debit card, HMRC, which uses a different ID, which isn’t automatically tied to your phone...

Thanks for sharing. On the latter picture, what size wheel do you use for the deep hollow grinds? Is that surface ground finish from a hard wheel or a belt system? Will you refine it before HT, or just wait to clean up post heat treat?

“First” indication? I don’t think it’s the first, just that you (or I) didn’t notice earlier ones much.

Another way to look at it is that if a small country creates an onerous local law, it’s unrealistic to expect the rest of the world to shoulder the burden. We have already seen this with GDPR and some US sites simply not allowing access from Europe. We also see it with US and European retailers...
