    Old, but good...

Filson Cruiser jackets Available in wool, double wool or tin-cloth (heavy duty waxed cotton) these have hardly changed since 1914. I love my two! Not cheap to buy new (or even second hand) but their use is measured in lifetimes rather than seasons. Not ultralightweight but they are tough as...

    Old, but good...

Weihrauch HW35 A no-frills break-barrel air-rifle. The design is 60 years old, the trigger over 100. It has a very secure breech-locking lever and does what it says on the tin. Swiss Army Knife Needs no introduction. The one-spring-two-blades mechanism has been around since 1896.

    Peta

I'd like to ask vegans where the petrochems for making their 'animal friendly' shoes come from. And the fossil fuels for flying their soyatofuwhatever from the other side of the world.

Raymond to the rescue (Raoul Moat)

The issue of actively using armed forces personell against a simple criminal was discussed already. Suffice to say it's a no-no. What a lot of people here seem to be forgetting is that Mr Mears was involved in the 'survival' and E&E community for years. He is involved with military survival...

    Small welding job?

Just what I was thinking, except 3 legs. Or epoxy resin would be even simpler.

Where to get wood for helve?

Pickaxe handles are often made from hickory, though I don't think whittling one down to an axe-handle would be much fun.

    Sweet justice......for once

And here we go again with a thread about youths running their motorbikes where they're causing a nuisance. Didn't realise it'd been a fortnight already. At least most people seem to be steering away (sorry) from this thread so far. It's like .177 vs. .22, except less interesting.

    Almost lost my Mora Clipper....twice

Take about 2" (50mm) of cord and tie into as large a loop as you can with a reef knot or a sheetbend. Put the knot right up into the belt-clip. You should be able to just about flip the loop over the end of the knife handle. So long as you remember to flip the retention loop over the handle each...

Where's the silliest place you've ever left a knife?

There's a museum in Sri Lanka with a well-used Victorinox Hunstman SAK in the grounds somewhere...

why is this country so adverse to us being outside?

I suspect the answer lies somewhere between Bones' and sapper1's answers.

    The burning question.

I don't know about Dunlops, but 365 condoms = 1 Goodyear... Taxi for one please...

A New Natural Tinder (burns like tinder fungus)

Not neccesarily, there isn't much of a convention on how to differentiate between a ferro-rod (this) and a fire steel (this) A ferro-rod's sparks are a lot hotter than those from a firesteel.

A New Natural Tinder (burns like tinder fungus)

Interesting. Can it be lit from a firesteel's sparks?

Opening wine bottles in the field

I wonder if saberage can be successfully transferred to macheteage, leukuage or billhookage?

That Chap Evading the Authorities in Northumberland

Ability to hit a given 'target' is but one part of the equation. Deer shooting in England is a 4" kill-zone at 200 or fewer yards with a scoped rifle. A lot of people can do that, doesn't make them a deer-stalker does it?

That Chap Evading the Authorities in Northumberland

Various constabularies have been replacing their 9mm carbines with 5.56 rifles over the past few years for a variety of reasons. However without going into detailed conjecturous discussions suffice to say that distance-shooting is not the strong-point of most police armed-response officers.

That Chap Evading the Authorities in Northumberland

There may be an element of 'security theatre' but I imagine them to be covering certain points -- roadblocks and such -- just in case he arrives there and... poses a direct risk.

    Confused and concerned, advice sought

Further to Graham's succint summary, there are several types of knife illegal to sell in the UK -- but you won't find these sold by any reputable supplier. These include 'flick knives', 'butterfly knives' and 'push daggers'. The term 'illegal' is often used inaccurately, and should be clarified...
