I wish the arguing would stop because in fact all of the points made are good and really worth thinking about. So far I am amazed by how well the Garmin works. I look back to the 60's and my field mapping and I sure see how modern technology has trivialized what was a lot of work. I can...

Good choices of compass! You can have a compass or some sensor inside even a heavy vehicle and calibrate it because stuff stays fixed. Back in the day it wasn't unheard of to tape a button magnet in someone's sleeve to see how fast they caught on in their field mapping. That was a...

Look what we found heads up!!

That sounds good. Here whenever deals come up, then being suspicious, I'm always looking for the catch - and often here I find one. It might be bacon packed in smaller amounts, or cans of tomatoes which no longer say "product of Canada", the farmers of which I'm trying to support.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know exactly what the constituents of the pouch are and where they came from?

The Pacific Crest Trail - timelapse

I went in for weeks in the early 70's. Now is it hugely crowded of course and so I live further north on the coast. Gosh how time flies - soon 50 years here! Basically the coast, the coast mountains and the Rockies where Robson lives are absolutely gob-smacking! I believe that is the...

    Green or black?

That's nice work! For myself though I prefer any colour of strap which has a break-free device. I love my Bushnell Fusions dearly, but I love breathing more and so am careful about putting strong unbreakable stuff around my neck... I'm not seeing such a device, and strap attachments on...

I sure agree with the cell coverage. It ends just out of Prince George, apparently is another carrier (Telus?) where you are and so is not available to me, and next coverage is Jasper! Just as bad to the west.. I did pick up a 62st which arrived today, and I'm curious as to how it will make out...

    Dog killed barn owl

Back in the day we were travelling across Canada to drop off the kids and pets in Alberta and then go on to visit my relatives who had come across to visit Ontario. So we were camping in a tent and the young German Shepard and kittens were outside by the fire. I got woken by strange noises...

Maybe an obvious question but - fire starting....

It's worth giving the old flint/steel charcloth a try. Just find an old empty butane lighter and rip off the metal flame cover - free. Now char some cotton cloth from old rag and put a spark onto the charred part - ember and fire! You might want to get a better setup and lots of practise before...

Maybe an obvious question but - fire starting....

I've got quite a few jetflame lighters around in a box somewhere - varying from cheap to expensive. They all have in common that they worked perfectly in good conditions, then failed totally in bad conditions. Similarly the flat sided adjustable flame butane lighters recommended by Cody Lundin...

    To buy or make?

Here we have three Mora blades from more than a decade ago. I'd picked up the leuku and the stub tang bowie blades on sale to try them out. The top blade hasn't been available for years so far as I know, but I liked it over Lauri blades I bought as blades and handled, because it is 3.3 mm...

Thanks for the help! While I'm only at 54 North, I'm now starting to see the issues around here with steep terrain and trees. I have to admit that I had thought that someone else here would already have added logging roads and tracks to topographical maps, using something like Openstreetmap...

Recommend me a AA possibles torch

I love my Fenix LD10, and I wear it on my belt all of the time. The issue to be aware of is that such small flashlights will cut back from high output in fairly short order as they warm up fast. Most of the time, though, you'll be running one on low output so as not to destroy night vision. I...

I'd forgotten to say that I'd considered a sweet deal on a satellite phone - a Globalstar, for use when transporting younger grandkids between Alberta and here. Luckily I did some research and found out that it wouldn't work on the route due to travelling E-W and mountains on the south side or...

    The Melt.

Yep here as in the other parts of Canada, logging roads are too soft from water and so likely to collapse. Melt is happening earlier here this year due to higher temps and lots of rain on top of the snow we do have. Even on regular roads, there are issues with avalanches and landslides.

How accurate do you find a phone GPS to be? I have to admit that I'd put anomalies with my vehicle GPS down to having an older cheaper unit. Apparently even heavy tree cover will cause large deviations, though.

    Protecting a new PC...

Good advice! I may have missed it, but I didn't see Secunia Software Inspector.. With a new Windows PC, it's essential to clean out all trial ware with CCleaner so that vulnerabilites in that stuff don't pose a problem in the future, Secunia SI will inspect current programs to make sure that...

I always hear about how great cell coverage works there compared to here - but I thought that would be the case... No, it's the conditions around here which can cause issues with tiny gps receivers in phones. That must be hard to believe if yours has always worked where you are, but...

I'm curious too about coverage in W Norway.. Here while I just might get a Garmin64 to play with, gps on a phone would be suicidal. With no cell signal out of town, I guess I could write up my last wishes more neatly on the phone, in case of an accident in the bush. Seriously it's pointless to...

I love my little old Nokia C3! It's an alarm clock, and on really bad mornings I can use the wifi to check the weather without getting out of bed at 5:00AM when I hear people digging out their vehicles like I used to do! With headphones it works as a radio when power is out. Calendar and...
