Cheers for all the help guys, as it turned out i didnt have a lot of time for fishing. i got me a cheep telescopic rod and used the kit that came with it, did a bit of spinning, but not so much as a nibble. will bare all advice in mind for next time :-)

Thanks for the advice guys. Will do some reading around and try and find a fishing shop. You need a fishing licence, , but this can be supplied by the canoe company I'm going through. Or at least that's what they've said.! Better double check

also being an "odd" shape i can definitely relate to making your own gear. however my shape is long and thin (ish) at 7' tall.
i am looking into experimenting with shirts and such, do you have any recommendations for suppliers of materials such as wool (have made a blanket shirt)...
i recommend you tube. much better to see someone do it.
