    Free GPS/phone maps

download the free versions of Maverick or Back Country Navigator on your phone. You can then access the 1;25k os mapping (i think sourced via bing maps) for free, and the app can download it onto your phone when you have wifi so you don't need a 4g connection when you use the mapping either

How to care for an old SAS Rucksack (aka PARA bergen)?

perhaps make a think silicon solution mixing white spirit with clear bathroom silicon sealant, and then paint it onto the inner face of the fabric?

Citizen Ray Mears Tough Watch - Are they really tough?

Aside form being weatherproof, one of the best attributes i think for an outdoor watch is good illumination. If one's preference is with an analogue watch, then my choice is to go for one that's got the little tritium vials. Available from china now - including a rather good quality Luminox Navy...

    Smock question.

At one time you could get a (rough) copy of the dennison in ventile, from ebay - a Romanian seller I think. Not seen anything else similar though (i assume you are after a plain olive green etc - otherwise there are lots of options for reproduction camo versions on the net). For potential...

    Deerhunter Avanti Smock

I might be wrong here, but similar to my old Ridgeline Monsoon, i believe that this has a 'brushed tricot' face fabric - this is basically like an extremely short pile fleece/suede type effect on the outer face, which, if it is like the ridgeline, is very quiet. The downside of course is that...

    Deerhunter Avanti Smock

Me too. Even better if i can make a little bit of that money back by offloading the ridgeline monsoon on ebay. If you are prepared to get one in a camo print, they are even cheaper at £72.50...

    Deerhunter Avanti Smock

Many thanks, i'll try to track that down as well.

    Deerhunter Avanti Smock

Whilst I currently own a Ridgeline Monsoon smock, it is one of the originals, so about as breathable as a crisp packet. It is however a great design, I love the style and the practicality, it’s just for any even moderate activity, the condensation build up inside is extraordinary! I recently...

    New Jacket advice

If you liked your belay jacket, but feel that it doesn't cut it for long static periods in the cold and wind, try looking at a snugpak sasquatch. Relatively bulky, but ludicrously warm, with a fabulous hood. You won't want to move around much in it though. The sizes come up very large, so...

    Winter Tarp Suggestions?

To be honest, i have used my DD XL in the manner indicated by crosslandkelly, and it worked very well - no drama with coverage. I suppose that it depends how much sag you like on your hammock, but with a relatively steeply angled roof, you have over a meter of 'drop' down the sides. Not enough...

    Ridgeline elite smock latest model?

Yes, it really was/is! I'd probably consider the mk 1 as entirely non breathable if my experience with it is anything to go for - significant condensation it it even when sat still wearing it for more than 30 mins at a time. A real shame, as the design etc is great - so if they have sorted out...

    Coat suggestions please?

Perhaps, if you don't mind camo, the army issue MTP smocks could be an option - the version that has the goretex drop liner, and the siliconised polycotton outer. Usually sold on the likes of ebay such as...

    Cheap compass recommendations please.

I'm interested that people appear to have found options for cheap compasses that are liquid damped. All of the sub £10 compasses i seem to have found before have no liquid damping, so the needles jump all over the place....

Hunka Bivvy bags - Any good?

I used a hunka (standard sized) in the military for quite a few years as a lighter replacement to the issue one. It stood up fine, including quite a few nights sleeping on concrete, and never had any problems with breathability. As mentioned above, I'd recommend the XL unless you are really...

    Watch

I've got a very well made chinese copy of a Luminox tactical watch. Its super heavy duty (metal case/frame), uses a swiss movement (so I'm told) and has tritium vials on the hands and hour points so that reading it in the dark is supremely easy. I swapped it over to a nato band out of personal...

    Bushcrafting With An Inflatable Canoe

Very interesting post, thanks for taking the time to knock that together. I must admit that the idea of an inflatable canoe is something that I have been toying with for a few years now. I have even been looking at the collapsible canoes (Wayland etc), but seriously expensive! I may just need to...

    military surplus for skiing

I have used a buffalo smock for skiiing and found it great. I imagine the current issue 'thermal smock' would be similarly useful, but be aware that it won't keep you terribly warm if you are static.
