Basic and cheap equipment for (stock removal) blade making

Oh wow - I've just read through the posts above - and there is some terrific advice there - thank you all so much! Clearly tapping into a lot of hard won knowledge. Some great book and video recommendations - i'll get working through them. Getting quite excited by this prospect now!

Basic and cheap equipment for (stock removal) blade making

Just looking to try my hand at a little blade making. Can anyone recommend some cheap power tools to use? I’ve got a drill press (in place of a pillar drill) already, but I assume that a belt sander/bench grinder is the way to go for stock removal and handle shaping? If I’m to be realistic with...

Great - glad you like it! Very happy with mine. £40 is a bargain!

    snugpak quality?

My impression of Snugpak rucksacks is that they are average at best. As above, a decent Karrimor SF/PRI (not normal karrimor), or 5.11 (such as the excellent Rush 24) would likely be a better bet. If you are after more compartments, and aren't inclined towards the Rush 24, then perhaps consider...

SF Sabre 45 front molle/pocket mod, anyone?

Top notch! I reckon there is a market for a product like that, its probably a fairly universal fit...

SF Sabre 45 front molle/pocket mod, anyone?

That looks a great idea, and something that would probably adapt to a fairly wide range of large daysacks. I'll be very interested to see it in operation! I did wonder whether the top part of the panel above the highest compression strap fittings might be a little too 'floppy' to be usable with...

    What's your favourite compass?

Love my Silva type 4 (the military version in Mils and with the very bright Tritium illumination) - no frills compass with a base plate long enough to do decent bearings, rubber feet so it doesn't spin on the map, and tritium illumination so you don't need to use a torch at night - fabulous bit...

    Alt-berg civilian vs military boots

A slight tangent to the thread, but i understand that Aku boots are now starting to get issued. The best issue boots i had were the Haix cold weather boots (full leather, with goretex lining) - turned out to really fit my feet well, and be very comfy. I still struggled with the altbergs - tried...

    Best bargain watches?

I just accidentally posted this in the wrong thread, but here it is again!: I brought a chinese clone of a Luminox style tactical watch about three years ago. Its made in metal (i think Luminox are usually polymer?) and uses the Tritium vials so its great at night. Been extremely impressed with...

    What did you buy today?

I brought a chinese clone of a Luminox style tactical watch about three years ago. Its made in metal (i think Luminox are usually polymer?) and uses the Tritium vials so its great at night. Been extremely impressed with it, looks as good as new, and had rather a lot of abuse. I believe i...

    Athlete's Foot

Tea Tree Oil is also excellent I find. you can get bottles of the stuff neat on ebay and the likes, and its fairly easy to mix it up with some kind of dilluttant (e.g. olive oil) and paint/spray it on quickly. I know how much hassle looking after feet can be when you are out and about for a...

    Modern British army clothing

I wouldn't fully agree. Utilising China to manufacture equipment (as do most outdoor equipment companies) means that the MOD can afford (and therefore supply to its troops) vastly better equipment than if they were to pay higher costs to provide UK manufactured equipment. As someone that has...

    Wheres the parachutes hiding?

That's a good point - and simply folding would probably create less pathways for drips to penetrate too.

    Wheres the parachutes hiding?

Ah, you make an excellent point! I was also thinking of sewing some 'ties' into a couple of panels all the way from the hem to the centre, with a plan to roll up and tie away a couple of panels to reduce its size when necessary. I have no idea if that would work!

An American looking for opinions on a pack out of the UK!

Yes, i bought one of the marauder 'sas style' packs a few years back (a different style to that which you linked to), and have never used it - to be honest it was just too flimsy and not overly well made. The pack that you linked to is a commercial copy by that same company of the genuine issue...

    Wheres the parachutes hiding?

Damn - They listed the larger main (x type parachute) a few days prior to putting that listing up, so i took the plunge - £55, but a larger 32ft diameter...

    Wheres the parachutes hiding?

Sorry to resurrect an old thread. Unfortunately I missed out on the links above (now sold out). Anyone know of an alternative source? I notice the SES ebay shop does have the newer LLP parachutes (although £60!) – does anyone have experience of this type (28 panel/38ft diameter) as a shelter...

Ridgeline Monsoon Elite II smock or something else?

The Dearhunter Avanti smock might be an alternative https://bushcraftuk.com/community/index.php?threads/deerhunter-avanti-smock.147208/ Probably not directly comparable with the latest monsoon as the fabric is a lot thinner and stretchy, but I'm happy with mine.
