I have an excellent trick to prevent you feeling that sweaty feeling with marigolds. All you have to do is fill them with jelly (or cat food) and voila! No sweaty feeling guaranteed
I always have a knife on me, a decent quality small slip joint and small Leatherman on my keys that go everywhere.

I was always told to leave bark on and dip the ends in PVA or wax when drying to prevent splitting, and the lo her the better, again to prevent splits, 12 months etc.
You can look into microwaving them, but I can't advise on this except I know it's done.
