    Hand dipped candles

I thought I'd add a few more details. Unfortunately the place I bought the mould and wax melter has changed hands a few times so I can't post up exact details. The mould is a simple 6" taper, cost about £20, I think it's a silicone/rubber mix and should be fairly robust - it's made over 50...

New Expandable Power Station - Aferiy P280

I shouldn't moan too much as it's one of the low voltage poles that only feeds our house! There's quite a few and a couple more have been condemned so we expect a few more outages. They're normally very quick so we should cope easily Might need to sort one of these battery things out as they...

New Expandable Power Station - Aferiy P280

Interesting, thanks. Funnily enough our power is scheduled to be out for a day next week.

    Hand dipped candles

Not hand dipped but still hand made. Needed a few candles for the dark winter evenings so used my single candle mould and small wax melter, placed on the wood burner, over a few evenings to make a batch of beeswax candles. (The wax is from old brood frames, hence the darker colour).

What fungi did you spot today?

A few on a similar theme from our fields and woodland. Hazel gloves, found in our bit of rainforest. Some dead man's fingers on an old ash stump And some smokey spindles in our unimproved pasture

    Modern day Billhook

There's so many different shapes of bill hook and hedge laying style I expect we'll all have different preferences. I think when I did my course a chainsaw and axe were the preferred tools from some of the experienced people (along with a mini-digger as this is Devon) as the hedges are often...

What wildlife did you spot today?

It is, and along with the lack of the of the more obvious things such as Kingfishers there's a large number of less obvious things killed off. I've spent quite a bit of time exploring our stream and I've never seen a live fish in it sadly. There's been the odd dead fish during the very hot and...

    Chainsaw advice

It would be interesting to hear how you get on with it. As has been said a few times, keep the chain sharp, and if logging up avoid cutting into the soil and it's worth brushing off the logs if dirty.

Is "preparedness" a state of mind?

We would have to walk miles to get a poorly run bus, but I expect that in the country. What I'm referring to is the services you would expect and feel you're directly paying for are being severely cut or withdrawn in some places whilst the taxes to pay for them are being increased. Our recycling...

What wildlife did you spot today?

Saw another king fisher on our stream today. Somewhat bittersweet as I expect it's a youngster yet to realise there's hardly any fish about due to the pollution. If the streams in the area were cleaned up these sightings along with otters etc would be far more common.

    Multi Battery Flashlight(s)?

Indeed, and it would be good to hear how you get on. I've just been wondering if there's any decent rechargeable bulkhead type lights about but can't seem to find anything.

Is "preparedness" a state of mind?

We left that behind well over a decade ago. For us it was a fairly logical decision as it was fairly obvious we could spend most of our earnings simply to enable us to carry on working. We can now live comfortably on quite a small income. The main problem we are going to face is having enough...

    Multi Battery Flashlight(s)?

I would ask myself why, that's not being dismissive but what would it offer me. I like either a long running torch, so the 18650, 21700 etc or something small and light such as the 14500, 16340 etc. I wouldn't find a short running bulky torch that useful. I like the backup of AAs as I always...

    Multi Battery Flashlight(s)?

Nothing on that scale but I've tried my little Wurkkos HD12 on AAs and it worked acceptably. It runs better on the 14500s but many 14500 torches don't seem to run on AAs at all.

    Chainsaw advice

It will depend on what type and size the trees are, @demented dale ? Another option would be to barter someones time, I like to do as much as possible myself but if the trees are a decent size then it could well be worth getting someone to help with a petrol saw. It's surprising how much I can...

    Is there less honour recently?

Even if it makes you sound like a Klingon I'd agree there is less honour around these days. Having said that I've recently had a few "too good to be true purchases" on ebay and remembered to film me opening the parcels. They've both been genuine.

    Is it just me?

Can you be more useful? There will be old stock knocking around but in the UK & EU they don't seem to have been made for several years. Getting hold of any may be difficult as not many companies will knowingly transport them either.

    Winterizing the home.

Finally swept the chimney* and serviced the wood burner on Friday, and lit for the first time yesterday. I deliberately left it later in the year as we tend to light the fire too early and end up burning through the wood pile before spring truly arrives. *As I can peer up the chimney I removed...
