    Potentially a bargain ?

The description says they're mixed sizes so I'd have thought worth a punt? I'm half tempted myself, although don't have the time to move them on. So far, whenever I've been tempted by a 'too good to be true' lot on ebay it has turned out to be fine and saved me.a lot of money. Quite a few...

    Hand dipped candles

First go at making a simple jig tonight. This one just holds four candles but there's room for 8 or more in my melting pot. Jig strung up: Candles fully dipped: And made.just the right size for some new to me candle holders:

    Blackout Kit

Well, I do have several more head torches that he recommends... I've now managed to watch the video and I would emphasise the need for a CO alarm if you are using any form of gas/parafin etc stove indoors. I'd also recommend trying things out before you need them. For example, I found the plug...

    Worst.Job.Ever.

Having a bad day? I've stacked shelves, swept floors, processed refunds for people who've obviously stolen the items. But the worst time I've has was as a well paid contractor when there's been hardly any work to get on with. I hate being bored at work!

    Capers

No they grow on caper bushes, Capparis genus I understand. (You seem to be able to grow them in the UK so another plant for my list...) You can pickle the young seed pods and flower buds of nasturtiums. We've done that for many years and they make a nice addition to a pizza.

    Limited Canned Goods.

Not near any heat source, normal centrally heated house so dry 20° ish. To be fair the out of date tins of sardines with ring pulls seemed fine. Mind you, if they go off they'll just become a Scandinavian delicacy.

    Limited Canned Goods.

This might not be the best thread but does anyone know if the ring pull style cans, such as soup, should last as long as ones you need a tin opener for? I found a tin of soup in my mum's cupboard that had expanded and oozed black goo everywhere. Stored in a warm, dry house. It was out of date...

Are you using the rope for anything interesting or just tying up loose ends?

What wildlife did you spot today?

I'm not saying it been very wet, our road is bad and it's unseasonably warm but I've just rescued a newt from a flooded pothole outside our house. I may have to keep an eye on all the other potholes for frogspawn soon.

Candle manufacture method effect on burning?

On a small scale I find the moulds can be slow and a bit tricky. You need to set the wick central, wait for the wax to set and then release the candle which can be difficult. With a frame to hold the wicks in place it should be easy and quick to make several candles at a time. You can also make...

    Wooden Chopping Boards

I actually thought @johnnytheboy had access to woodland and it would be worth making his own. I've used a board split out of sycamore before, when it's got a bit old it went on the fire. I should make some more. We mainly use an end grain boad picked up in a sale from of the DIY sheds for a few...

    Blackout Kit

Internet where I am is too slow to watch the video, anything novel in it? I think back home we have most things sorted but it might be time to sort out a battery bank for work. I get the feeling we are going to get more power cuts due to lack of maintenance on the grid along with the poor...

    Swedish preparedness pamphlet

Just an update on this. Mum has received an update from BT that didn't give much info but stated she will get an upgrade but there's no need to change equipment. A quick call to BT has confirmed they are upgrading her exchange to turn the digital signal to analogue to send down the existing...

    Open question - Financial

I'm not sure the value would go up much at the moment but if you like spending time in the woods it can save you spending money on other things such as holidays etc. I can also get plenty of valuables things out of mine such as firewood and if it all goes pear shaped I could stay there for...

Bushcraft and homesteading skills in WW3

The two battery back ups on BTs site say "at least an hour", I think I read somewhere it can last for two. Not long enough for where my Mum lives and it wouldn't be long enough where we live.

Bushcraft and homesteading skills in WW3

I'm used to paying for parking. It's the badly installed ANPR equipment that's replacing the pay and display stuff that's useless. There's still signs up everywhere insisting you pay and display but no machines. The ANPR sign gives incorrect info and after one visit the pay machines stopped...

Bushcraft and homesteading skills in WW3

A rather tenuous link to that. The hospital mums in at the moment has now converted the parking to ANPR, so each visit my car will be recorded. I wouldn't mind much but it doesn't work very well so I have no idea if I am going to get a fine in a few weeks or not.

Lots of people do. In many places the mobile reception across all the networks isn't great or non-existent. That's not just remote places but often forgotten areas near quite built up places. My mum is one such place, you can get basic reception if your mobile is placed against a window, not...
