Wild garlic at home. Home garlic?

I thought this was interesting. The same patch as my earlier photo but after a very wet autumn and winter. Soil is acidic clay and it appears that a large patch of mature bulbs have died out and a google does show that bulbs are prone to rotting if too wet. It seems that there are plenty of new...

What grease do you fry in?

Olive oil, rapeseed oil, sunflower oil or butter, depending on what were cooking.

    Voltage drops under load

Interesting day today, woke up to kettle seeming more quiet than usual, tested house voltage with everything off and it's under 200v, turn a few things one and we can get it under 170v. The original problem was confirmed to be down to the supply cables to our house being too thin, something...

    What are you growing?

I doubt we'll grow a vast amount this year as I've not been around much. But I'm grateful for the perennial plants we've got such as the wild garlic and even the nettles that are providing lots of usable spring greens. Also looking forward to a proper harvest of bamboo shoots! I hope to get...

    Spring arrived all at once

The first day back home after a few weeks away and it's been very springy or even a hint of early summer here. Along with the bees, bumbles and honeys, there's been a few butterflies like peacocks about, and I've been pleasantly surprised to see several slowworms and even a couple of basking...

    Still lots of Covid about?

I hope you're fully recovered now? It does give me something more to go on and there appears to be a suitable "Intermediate Care Unit". I remember when mum was in the same hospital a few years ago some other elderly patients were in horror at going to one particular centre so I understand your...

Wild garlic at home. Home garlic?

I think in a small space I wouldn't want it around. The patches locally don't seem to spread much though but I have heard of some problems with it. Because it often grows at the side of the road, like many other invasives, it'll be spread about by the councils who are the ones who should...

    Still lots of Covid about?

Once she's medically fit, i.e. recovered from her infections, she needs convalescence. She needs to recover lost weight, muscle strength and fitness. This needs to be full time. Th hospital sent her home without the ability to go to the loo throughout the day or the ability to get dressed. She...

    Still lots of Covid about?

Thank you, I am aware I might be able to claim something but I don't need to. There are also things I can't do, such as more medically oriented care. On the subject of carers though, this is something I now need to sort out for mum as the hospital just seem to think if she managers to get to...

Wild garlic at home. Home garlic?

I'm not at home now but this is a photo from last year of one of the patches of ramsons planted in my woodland. Started out at about 20 plump bulbs 15ish years ago. Not rapid but a nicely established now.

Is "preparedness" a state of mind?

Definitely not your usual lab, not sure if it's a flatcoat, a cross or something I'm not aware of. I've not been able to ask, there's certainly a glint in it's eye that might suggest a more lively dog.

Wild garlic at home. Home garlic?

Perhaps in a pot ramsons might need a fair bit of watering but once established I've found them trouble free and on the verge of invasive. Vast areas grow on the chalky slopes of the north downs, under trees, so they can cope very well with dry conditions.

    Still lots of Covid about?

One of the many problems with the hospital mum stayed in is that she's not received the care she should, i.e. the care they claim to provide. She has lost weight and this is known and should have been treated but nothing much was done. Elderly patients who spend weeks in bed ill should have...

Is "preparedness" a state of mind?

On that note, there's the most handsome, black, long haired retriever type dog that frequents a local Tesco. I'd love to say hello but can only exchange the odd flirty look as it's a guide dog and is really working. (Actually the staff walk round with the owner as well so the guide dog can spare...

Is "preparedness" a state of mind?

The only think I like to make eye contact with when I'm out shopping must have nice ears, a wet nose and a decent waggy tail.

Wild garlic at home. Home garlic?

We've also have carpets of pignuts on our land, not got round to hunting for them really but love the flowers. Personally I'd try and collect seeds from as close by as possible if you want to grow them. Growing them in a pot also makes harvesting easier. Ramsons can spread if it finds somewhere...

Wild garlic at home. Home garlic?

They do look like ramsons. I wouldn't pick any leaves this year, just let the bulbs fatten up. Collecting seed from some other plants and sprinkling about will help a clump establish.

    Still lots of Covid about?

Thank you. The conditions my mum has, such as very bad arthritis, COPD, joint problems will not improve. Hopefully she will regain some muscle lost from the hospital stay but not much. I've known this for years and understand and accept the situation. I appreciate the kind words but it's...

    EcoFlow DELTA 3 Classic

I am watching the offers, that's why I create an account as I'd read you get member offers. I had expected the prices to go up but not seen any movement yet. I have been sent an offer as I've left something in my basket for a couple of days, so worth noting. I may well end up waiting for a...

    Still lots of Covid about?

Thanks for asking. She's home but seems to have a worse cough than usual, I have something similar so I assume it's left over from COVID. The long hospital stay hasn't been kind to her either. I am a fairly realistic person and I know she's never going to recover from many of her ailments, I'm...
