    Is this fatwood?

No, that is heart-wood. Fatwood is from the thick resinous roots at the point where the roots join the trunk. If the tree has been dead for a long time then the volatile oils that catch light so well will probably have evaporated by now but it might be worth a look. You can smell turpentine...

    What are you currently reading?

I think character development is exactly what it was. It wasn’t any part of the plot; there was no magical split. In Weird Sisters her characteristics from Equal Rites had been shared (and developed) in two directions).

    Forgotten Snacks

“Forgotten Snacks?” Dunno - I’ve forgotten! I’m trying to remember snacks from the 50’s and in accordance with the OP - I can only remember one. So: “REMEMBERED SNACK.” Smiths Potatoes Crisps: What flavour? [looks incredulous] Potato- what else? There wasn’t anything else. But they were...

It was Scouting that got me into Bush Crafting, can any other claim the same?

Just had a quick scan. Can’t find it but it could be there. I certainly don’t remember it. EDITED TO ADD: My family tells me that he did say that. The daughter who became one of the first Girl Scouts was told this.

Is "preparedness" a state of mind?

@Woody girl Glad it worked out OK

Is "preparedness" a state of mind?

It’s preparedness a state of mind? Probably, but then so is healthy scepticism. I loved this, received from a friend in Los Angeles. Self evidently it could still happen, but in the meantime this is healthy.

    Barlow knife ?

Looks useful. It’s not a paper knife so why sweat that? I think you made an excellent decision. Enjoy it for all the things that it does.

Anyone who has climbed in Wales has looked down on RAF aircraft.

    Going green broke my fridge!

Veolia (Contractors to T&W Council) are ultra strict. Some years ago I dumped a load of tape cassettes. I put two boxes on the parapet and tipped one. An attendant picked up the other, looked at the top ones and asked if he could have them. I pointed out that he could reach most of the...

    Introducing myself.

Hello, I’d recommend Classic Camp Stoves Forum. It’s based in the UK but I’d estimate that there are more American members than British. They are extremely helpful and very knowledgeable people.

    Barlow knife ?

I bet it’ll do all the things that you’d normally use this type of knife for.

    I’m grieving

Indeed Steve, that has been on my mind. Various experts that I’ve spoken to doubt that it can help on all the seams. There Is hope for the double seams where the polycotton outer surface is sewn to itself. Any seam that has an interface with the PU surface is probably doomed. I have always...

    I’m grieving

After more than eighteen years the PU surface of my crazy quasi tipi is degrading to the point where seam seal tape won’t adhere. It’s become a shower unit rather than a shelter. The tipi was a con. When I bought it, it wasn’t waterproof at all, the centre pole made it unusable and i could...

    Going green broke my fridge!

Did the glass shelves survive? If not then I agree with the grill idea ^^^^^ Look out - brain fart! Whether wire or glass: I am presuming that you don’t want to drill the walls of the fridge and for two pairs of stainless steel rods to replace your canes. It’s what I’d do before I bought a new...

It was Scouting that got me into Bush Crafting, can any other claim the same?

Scouting for boys was based upon one of Powell’s military works (forgotten which) that had become a best seller as a”boys book”. The Scouting version was indeed influenced by The Boys Brigade but by all sorts of youth movements as well. A small group of girls decided that they wanted to be...

    Tribe size

My family tribe has increased as the grandchildren arrive but I don’t think that is where this thread is going. My social, acquaintance group has diminished significantly but that is simply because one central interest of mine used to attract a large following. Now considerably less so. This...

    Barlow knife ?

In your place i certainly wouldn’t sweat a high price knife. Keep your father’s knife for the good stuff and spend <£20 on a day to day knife. It will do everything that you want it to -see the discussion about bushcraft knives. ….. and that’s where I stop (@Woodcutter disagrees) An...

    Barlow knife ?

I’m not a big fan of shelf dwelling knives but in your shoes is definitely keep my fathers knife as it is - maybe a few file strokes to the ricasso IF that would help it settle. A Sheffield blade is something to be proud of, well worth keeping. Also, there must be a story to this knife. It’s...
