But the Snigel doesn't have an adjustable length back, which I think is a basic design error for a modern pack?

    Belgian M97 back length hack

Clever mod........... I am 6' 4".......but it's not ones height that's the issue, it's ones back length....measured from bump at base of neck (C7) to top of pelvic girdle. As a rule of thumb, go for packs with adjustable back lengths or measure the back length; for despite my height my back...

Backpack with suspension/aeration and removable PLCE-type side pouches?

I think? the OP/hughtrimble may mean a system akin to that on the Osprey Aether or Atmos????

Could you please recommend me a rucksack?

If the excellent Sting (with it's adjustable back) is too large, what about some of the smaller Snugpak packs....won't have adjustable backs though?

    LARGE COMFORTABLE BACKPACK RECOMMENDATIONS

As has been said before, but not enough......know your back length and get a pack that fits you properly, or has an adjustable back. Everthing else is secondary to this..........

    LK 35 Rucksack

THey are now hard, and getting expensive, to find. My first stop would be Military Mart...but phone Dave and speak to him as he can be very helpful and tenacious in finding stuff? Don't rely on their website............. Also, Varusteleka have proven a good source?

    LK 35 Rucksack

UPDATE: This pack, like most has now undergone several incarnations or versions of modification over the years...... 1/ It now hangs from a 70s aluminium frame with a bottom shelf. This saves some weight over the steel original frame and leaves more room underneath if you want to stuff anything...
