My free (work supplied) safety boots have been used for walking trips (mountains, moors and over 100 miles in four days before), motorcycling trips, snow days, gardening and general kicking about in. I even did some work whilst wearing them once I think.

It's not difficult at all. Scales pop off easily, warming them just limits damage to the mounting holes so you can potentially re-use them. Pins need drilling carefully but can be re-used it you're removing a layer or two. Backsprings are not very stiff so easily go back together with a twist...
Victorinox Safari Pathfinder ( top) was hard to find when it was available so pricey now unless you're lucky.
Walker (bottom) had sporadic availability but again, pricey now if you find one.
The Mercury in the middle is both available and good value.
The best of the lot though is the Farmer...
Cove 2 (2 person but more like 1) or Cove 3 (3 person but really 2) £50 each inc. PayPal and UK mainland delivery.
Lightweight, aluminium poles, silicon coated nylon outer, taped seams, separate inner.
Cove 2 is 1.7kg, Cove 3 is 2kg.
Both unused, the Cove 2 only pitched for pics, with my pegs...
Those Puma knives are not what they once were.
+1 for the Mercury. Quality, and quite chunky for a 2 layer.
You could strip an old SAK and build your own. Not too difficult. Or ask a custom SAK modder to do it, depending on budget.
Most of these modern technology features seem to be a solution to a problem that shouldn't exist, allowing drivers to concentrate less on what they are doing.
Same goes with all technology, promotes laziness and an expectancy that the tech will sort everything out.
