What wildlife did you spot today?

about half an hour ago i had an encounter with a land crab (who -- as the name suggests-- live on land rather than near the ocean. they can be found waayys up in the mountains and usually come out after rain. not sure how common this is for crustaceans, but the females carry the young ones with...

What wildlife did you spot today?

a troop of howling monkeys were LITERALLY in the trees above my hut this morning -- and they are called "howlers" for a reason... (==they start their "concert" long before sunrise which makes sleeping somewhat impossible...)

    Sharpening kit workshop

sharpening pucks (for axes etc.) don't exist here and buying one online would cost me 3x more in shipping and import than what the puck costs... :-(

    Sharpening kit workshop

thanks for your infos. so far it's just ideas i'm playing with (as i've to make some more money first...) but i'll keep it in mind for when things improve a bit:finger: sadly diamond or ceramic stones are nonexistent here, so buying online would be my only option...

    Non-military camouflage?

i'm not sure if it's still available or how expensive it would be to produce in small quantities, but the camo pattern of the NVA (== the armed forces of what INCORRECTLY gets called East GERMany) was "raintarn" -- an olive green base with little stripes in brown. from a few meters away the...

    Sharpening kit workshop

i'm interested in a larger diamond stone for sharpening farm tools, all what's available here are crappy synthetic stones which are softer than the tools you try to sharpen...

    Sharpening kit workshop

how good is the quality of their stuff?! some of those items look suspiciously low-price, but i'm tempted to get one or two stones once i've the funds and providing the costa rican government doesn't rip me off with import costs...

What wildlife did you spot today?

not spectacular in itself, but yesterday i went across our moat (=the small river separating the farm where i live from civilization) and saw a swarm of small fish migrating upriver -- when i returned an our later they were still migrating ... never seen anything like it before

What knife(knives) do you use bushcrafting?

●"little ben" (==the Ben Orford i received last year from a very generous fellow member as a gift) lays at night onder my pillow and at daytime "sits" in a baldric/ shoulder holster across my chest when it's "jungle time" (and as i'm typing right now) ●Leatherman "surge" on my belt ●usually a...

    Self contained ignition

yes, forgot to mention: the crater is in the desert near Halls Creek in northern W.A. ; i would however suggest taking 4WD instead of a Ford Festiva for a trip to Wolf Creek :P (although my beloved "festiva" performed well!)

    Self contained ignition

it's the world's second largest asteroid crater on land, about 800m across and 300000 years old ; there's also a (horror) movie called "wolf creek" which was filmed after i went there...

and "buffalo chips" on the north american prairies... i used dried cow pats as fuel on my way back from Wolf Creek Crater in 2005, too and it did the job to cook my diner
