    Alternatives to ventile?

I have a single layer Ventile anorak (Tilak Odin) a d have to say that in the chucking down rain I have been significantly underwhelmed by it's performance. It's a nice garment, great in the wind and relatively well vented, but when its wet its pretty gash.

what did Robinson Crusoe use to start his fire?!

I don't know the actual answer but paper/rag soaked in saltpeter solution then dried acts as a blue touch paper and burns with a fizz. Or Yellow Pages does anyway cos I did it as a teenager.

    Watch repair vs new watch?

Casio Duro? Clicky here. I have a couple of them, a black one and a blue. I have pretty big wrists and they don't look too small on me. Many do. I had to junk the standard straps cos I was on the last hole on em and the mineral glass on the black watch got scabbled at work. I bought a cheapo...

    I can't stand Deadpool

While we're all being catharic and admitting to not liking popular films. My wife loves those Lord Of The Rings films. I've sat and watched the lot and back to back it seems like about ten years of wasted time. Plus I can't stand the elves, all high and mightly elder tosspots. Prepared to make...

My probably annual winter jacket recommendation thread!!

North Cumbria here and I tend to have a light fleece and then a shell garment (usually a Tilak Odin single layer Ventile smock which is good in the cold, less so when its chucking it down) to keep the breeze from blowing the warm air out of the fleece. When it's properly wet it's just a gore tex...

    Cheap knives Uk?

Err, I have a standard Peasant with placky handle (in blue) and there's no issues with its strength at all. If I were to level a complaint at it I would say that when closed it takes up a LOT of pocket space cos the tang makes it very long. I've filed the blade down so its less that 76mm but...

    Pine martin release on dartmoor.

Aye, it would be an absolute disaster if those native pine martins wiped out a load of non indigenous pheasants. Mebbe need some wolves to control the pine martins ;)

    Pine martin release on dartmoor.

This from the Irish Pine Martin site which sugests that over the last few hundred years its mostly been gamekeepers and people who regarded them as vermin who have killed them. "Pine martens were most abundant in Ireland when tree cover was at its maximum, and before our Neolithic ancestors...

Selling old engineering tools - how to go about it?

As I clicked on this thread I had the image of vernier calipers in my head. Unfortunately I'm after metric though. If you're putting them on Ebay I'd include Liberia and the US as countries you'll post em to cos the US still uses Liberias measurement system. Ahem... something like that anyway...

    Pine martin release on dartmoor.

Do you need me to google it for you? As for the killing of raptors I'm sure Ramis can google *raptor persecution leadhills* for more area specific details. Also, why does anyone think they are endangered in areas where theres masses of food? I'm not keen on spending too much time on ratching...

    Pine martin release on dartmoor.

Dunno about all grouse moors but from what I hear since the widespread useage of medicated grit (which grouse consume to help break down heather) on grouse moors the amount of grouse per hectare has shot up by about 40% so significantly more food for predators. Some of which are protected by...

    Pine martin release on dartmoor.

My money is on gamekeepers killing them by trapping em on little bridges over any ditches. Same as they killed all the Hen Harriers. Well, not on the little bridges over ditches obviously, as they can fly but they still killed em and are continuing to do so. If anyone disputes this, at least...

    Power Tool Battery Inverters

I have a thing that goes on the top of my De-Walt cordless tool batteries. They're either 5 Ah (at 18 volts) or 9 Ah (again at 18 volts) and I've used the 5 Ah one to provide 5 volts DC and charge several phones when at a festival. Wasn't an inverter though, they give out alternating current

    I can't stand Deadpool

There's a trick to this not being able to stand Deadpool thing... Don't watch it. You can thank me later, you now have extra life time not spent winging about things you don't even care about.

    Recommendations on companion knife

Manly Wasp in S90V steel. UK legal slipjoint in excellent steel, stainless, holds a great edge, has strong detent positions at closed, 45, 90,130 degrees and fully open. It is NOT a one handed opener, get over that issue and it's a nice tool. Very slicey blade shape. Clicky here.

Voluntarily handing in a large blade to the UK police

That ^ exactly. I've been walking along an area with the dog for over a year using secateurs (and on the odd occasions a pruning saw) to clear an old path. The parts I've cleared only amount to about 250 metres as not all of the path was badly overgrown but it was dense stuff. Little by little...
