What wildlife did you spot today?

Mmmmm! The flesh just fell off the bones…….<burp!> :) (JK)

    free game

There was also an outbreak of Rabbit Heamoragic (spelling?) [hemorrhagic] Virus two years back which severely reduced rabbit numbers round here. It had around an 80% death rate, but the animals died in their burys. Linky The other issue for the sale of game was the introduction of traceability...

    free game

I was in a rabbiting group for several years, but unfortunately the older farmer that organised it passed on recently. We used to go out with the ferrets, purse and long nets on Sundays all through the winter, on land that we were asked to ‘attend to’. No dogs, no guns, but ethical dispatch. I...

Just finished our last pheasant pie last night. Yum yum, but no more beating for me this year.

    Weather to come.......

Much more and we’ll need a speedboat to get to the pub :canoe:

    What did you buy today?

2x 50 foot hanks of neon yellow 550 proper Paracord, and 2x TBS Ferrocerium fire steel blanks. Both from The Bushcraft Store. Thankfully the Paracord is really bright, and may swap out my tents front guy lines!

    Waterproof jacket recommendations

As mentioned in another thread, I’ve been very happy with my Hoggs of Fife Field Pro jackets. Their fit suits my body shape well - average height but stout and broad shouldered, and their prices were quite reasonable at places such as New Forest Clothing. I was out all day in heavy winds, rain...

    Weather to come.......

Over here near Wiveliscombe, we’re sharing much of the weather with WG. It’s been hoofing down for days, and the forecast isn’t much better. The wind/rain combo brought a tree down onto a high voltage power line yesterday evening, resulting in our entire village going off the mains. We popped...

    What are you growing?

I’ve got a dozen broad bean plants growing in seed pots on the windowsill. They’re about 10” tall now so need transplanting outdoors very soon. I’ll add a few extra seeds directly into the soil when I put the others outdoors for progression. Not a significant number of plants as my wife doesn’t...

    Plans for 2026

@slowworm Indeed - if you need a hand I’m on the far west Somerset border near Wivey.

My On The Bench Today Thread

Very nice. Did you use anything extra to bring up the colour/grain in the wood, for example red oil, before a final finish? Or do you have a good food-safe final finish that does it all? I only ask because I like to make a few cutting boards etc.

    Heart attack or other illness

Glad to hear you’re out and on the mend. I’ve only had to endure A&E at Musgrove, and they’ve been ok (if a little slow of course…) at that. Merry Christmas and all that!

    Heart attack or other illness

Yer lucky it’s not Musgrove Park with the view overlooking the huge cemetery :). Took the Park & Ride into Taunton for a last minute pre-Xmas look round today, and the bus loops round between them. Not really the kind of view you need when you’re convalescing!

    Happy Solstice folks

As always, it’s good to get to the shortest day with the promise of longer, brighter, warmer days to come.

Licensing for Knife Sellers or Importers

They will go out of business, which is presumably the intention of this intended legislation. As pointed out earlier, these items are effectively untraceable, and with a huge existing base there’s no way of knowing who supplied what or when. The consultation seems like a knee-jerk attempt to...

    Strange Food ideas.

Fresh strawberries with a good grind of black pepper - but only when in season. Yum. In fact there isn’t much that can’t be improved with fresh ground black pepper, IMO.

    WHAT DID YOU MAKE TODAY?

Odd as it may seem, I opened a book, standing it on end on a piece of card and then traced the shape of the opened pages with a pencil :). I eyeballed the thumb hole on the centre line to ensure enough material around it, and Bob’s-yer-wotsit. The only thing I’m wondering about now is the size...

    WHAT DID YOU MAKE TODAY?

I’ve seen these all over the place online, but almost all made of plastic. I’d thought about making a couple for my family & friends, but one of the ladies at our craft group is an avid reader, and not very well right now, so this prototype is for her. I made it out of a scrap of hickory as that...

Bush Craft. Quiz. Hope you do better than I did

I think that’s usually Joe Gibbs, but Simon is on other channels on YouTube.
