    SAK blade snapping?

I've broken lots of tools that nobody here would be interested in. I broke a German stainless machete which snapped clean when I battened with it. The blow that broke it was fairly gentle, with a tree branch of green willow about 2" diameter. Practically no bending force on the blade. I was...

    Limited Canned Goods.

As you specifically asked about cans, here's the current stock list for my mountain retreat, just the cans, sorted by number of cans, top six lines. Yes there are six. The corned beef cans do stack well, but they aren't cylindrical so you can leave them out if you want to. :) Baked beans...

    clothing patterns

SWMBO likes Old School tailoring, and she's made waistcoats for both of us for example. She usually modifies whatever she finds quite substantially. She says: She's been able to find little online in the way of sewing patterns, although there's a lot for knitting and crochet. There are a few...

    All-weather Woodland Access

How about a load of surplus branches from the garden maintenance people, or discarded Christmas trees? Just something fibrous to spread the load and bind with the mud. They used it in Tunisia for tanks...

Thank you to Whitby & Co

Hmmmm ... That's good to hear, as a while before Christmas I sent them my Leatherman Micra when a spring in it broke, and I haven't heard anything from them. I'll give them a bell.

    Article: Burning the right wood

Tony, I'd add to the 'Larch' notes that hot embers from larch fly everywhere on the wind and burn holes in groundsheets and stuff like that. Don't ask me how I found that out, but visit Britton Wood sometime. :)

Swap Tatonka mug with a lid

I have one that I'd be happy to swap, I'll let you have a photo if you like. Not sure that I can lay my hands on it this evening but if not it should be the weekend.

Different steels and ease of sharpening

Crikey, you're right! The things you find out after so many years! It seem like Sandvik did at one time supply stainless for springs and other parts, but not for the actual blades. Apologies for the misinformation, time to edit a post...

    Swiss Army style knife suggestions?

I'd suggest a multi-tool if you're going to be on the bike. When I'm on the bike I always take a SwissTool, or one of the Leatherman range. A pair of pliers is sometimes really useful. Unfortunately most of them won't have a corkscrew, but then I have no need of one. :) You might want to...

    Packable grill

That sounds good Mary. I've seen plenty of cheap woks, but I hadn't seen anything like that with a wok until I just did some searches prompted by your idea. Unfortunately the only things I found that looked suitable have all been 'currently unavailable' or similar. Have you got a link for me by...

No one talks about wet proofs

Amen to that. I've had a pair of Goretex lined gaiters for bloomin' ages, and they finally wore through where they occasionally rub on each other as I walk. I really didn't want to shell out for antoher pair, so I made patches from some scrap denim and glued them over the holes, on the inside...

No one talks about wet proofs

Breathable (and expensive I'm afraid) jacket with issue poncho. Absolutely utterly dependable waterproof combination. If it's going to be really wet for a long time (more than just a few hours) I'll use breathable waterproof trousers too, but I rarely need to bother. The best waterproof boots...
