    Just five things

How clever or cooperative can you be and keep within the spirit of the event? Can a tarp have tie outs and still count as one thing? Is a multi part fire kit one thing? Could a poncho have a long fringe that could be cut off and used as cordage? Can you borrow a knife or ferro rod from a...

Home methods, Hot Waxing a Knife Sheath

I've only ever done one, and being a beekeeper I used plain beeswax - and a heat gun to melt it and work it in. I'm very pleased with the results. Previously the (old) sheath was too soft and retention was poor, but both are corrected now. The leather is much darker - almost like it has been...

The making of "The Whitby Brooch"

I love it. Your idea that using the correct tools helps get the correct results makes great sense. Mind showing what tools you did use?

    Very expensive knives.

What is the bolster made of? In the used pic it looks brass, but when new it looked more silvery. Absolutely beautiful knife. I just happen to be working on one very like it but with a somewhat shorter blade for every day carry in a back pocket.

    Potential blade materials

It looks like it might be galvanized. If so you don't want to heat it too much as the fumes can make you really sick. If you really want to use salvaged steel old files are a fair bet.

    Hydraulic Rams

Pumps require external power - hydraulic rams don't.

    Favorite knife handle material?

    Good point.

    Favorite knife handle material?

Spalted Narwhal Oosic. Hard to find though. If that's not available then wood - stablized if needed. Desert ironwood is good and doesn't need stabilizing. I don't think synthetics have any mystical properties whatsoever - may as well just buy a muggle knife at Wal-Mart. We are talking...

Legalities fo Fishing rods, handlines etc

I'm pretty sure that there are lots of rods that are not even as long as that one. But for the sake of discussion lets say that a rod must be at least 36 inches long. Does that in any way protect the public interest? Or is it just arbitrary - or worse discriminatory? If so, one could argue...

A disgusting but necessary job for a delicious outcome!

If you want to slow cook something but don't have a slow cooker, an oven works just as well - or better. Heavy covered pot - 95 c for recipes that call for low - 120 c for high.

    Seasoned plum spoon

Very nice. Did you know that plumb would turn out like that - or get lucky? Either way it looks great.

You can improvise inside curve cutters by sharpening the end of a pipe on a grinder.

    Leather working tools

I watched this video by Sandy Jack on making a sheath for his Jacklore knife, and ordered one of everything he used in the process. Not exactly cheap, but I have everything I need and it all gets used. I tracked everthing down all at once because you can't really do a good job with only part...

    When to plant

Seed packets often have a recommended soil temp to plant by - it's probably the best thing to go by.

It makes no difference. Someone will still call it your man-purse.

    DIY Forge

If there is, it isn't me - I'm just a guy who wasted money and effort trying to build an economical (AKA cheap) forge using alternative materials. I think the saying is "Penny wise, but Pound foolish."

    DIY Forge

There are materials you can use to make a forge besides the mainstream ones that you can order from refractory and blacksmith suppliers - sodium silicate for binder, pearlite insulation, silica sand aggregate, etc... But the reason smiths (usually) use expensive ceramic wool, satanite, and...
