    Knife sharpening items (portable)

For fixed angle sharpening I use a EdgePal basic: The stone is a DC3. And the whole thing is very easy to store in a small pouch. But I don't bring it along in the field, unless it is to show it to someone. www.edgepal.com

    Knife sharpening items (portable)

Same here. I usually have a DC3 or DC4 in my pack. And sometimes I may touch up a blade with the ceramic side to keep it "screaming" sharp. But that is not really needed. I have never abused a blade in the field so I felt I really had to sharpen it at once. The only exception was if a carbon...

    Ultrafire wf-150d

No way !!! The Led Lenser lights are soooooo made in China. :) So for only slightly more you get another Chinese made flashlight with higher build quality, less brightness, less focus and old-fashioned battery-tech that you have to keep buying and throwing away batteries for every 2 hours...

    Ultrafire wf-150d

no way !! The Led Lenser P7 runtime you mention is on low power. I suspect that the usable throw is not 750 ft then? On full power the runtime is around 1.5 hours. With good NiMH the runtime is perhaps a little bit more, but NiMH are not recommended by Led Lenser. I don't actually own a Led...

    Ultrafire wf-150d

This is the light you want: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.14450 Cheaper, less than half the size and more light and focus than a LedLenser P14. But perhaps not as robust. So buy two. Buy a couple of rechargeble batteries and a charger as well...

    which Fallkniven knife?

I like it, but it is a little big. But sometimes that is a good thing. Very nice to work with. Still, if I had to choose only one, I'd pick the WM1 3G. Great knife and a faboulous steel. But as I said, the A1 and the WM1 together are a really good combo. The A1 is in my pack. The WM1 is around...

    which Fallkniven knife?

I couldn't decide. So I got me a WM1 3G and an A1. Good combo. If I was forced to buy another FK, It would be the S1.

What do you think of GPS units?

It is easy to imagine what might go wrong with a GPS. But compass and map is not foolproof either. It is possible to crush a compass, and a map may get wet or even outdated. If it is dark the map is hard to read, and once a compss of mine was stored near a magnet, and got reversed. That said...

What do you think of GPS units?

Never had any problems with getting a satelite fix when I am outdoors. Could perhaps be a problem in dense woods. But I haven't noticed it yet.

What do you think of GPS units?

I got the Garmin Oregon 550t with 1:50 000 topo maps of southern Sweden. You can buy 1:20 000 maps as well. I don't know what is available in UK. It has a 3d compass, so it is reliable even if not held absolutely level. Also a camera, very nice to take geotagged pix that you can browse using...

Which Fenix flashlight do you have ?

Got an E01 that has been retired from the keyring by a Nitecore EZAA. An L2D with white diffusor for home use and a new TK12 R5 with white diffusor for camp use. Like the runtime on low/medium with 18650. No plans for any new lights soon, but I got troubles with low impulse control regarding...

"Calcium carbide lighter"?, Do they still exist?

As kids we had a large paint can (4-5 liters) with a little water on the bottom and a 1 cm hole drilled on the side. You dropped in a piece of carbide, pressed the lid on hard. Then you lit a match and crouched down beside the can and put the match next to the hole. Boom! The lid flew really...

    turboflame lighter: refill

There is no air inside the lighter, only pressurized butane gas.

    turboflame lighter: refill

I assume that you do as is said above, hold everything upside down? At least that is how I do it, and I have never had any problem. May also be different lighters and refill cans. What you want to do is to get the liqufied gas, in the bottom of the refill can, to enter the lighter. If you hold...

    Falkniven?

I have two Fällkniven knives: A1z and WM1z3G. Both are very nice, but if pressed I'd only keep the WM1. A cut above most. :) The WM1 is very handy knife that is easy to keep around and while small, very useful. The 3G steel makes it a little difficult to sharpen, but on the other hand you...

    Why kelly kettles?

I like my KKs! I use my small KK to supply water for my thermos-cooking, when out and about. Dried veggies, dried minced meat and sausages, pasta, rice, noodles, lentils, dried milk powder, spices, and powdered tomatoes. And porridge and coffee in the morning. I use a 1/2 liter food thermos to...

    Technology

... or you could just reward the good guys now and then. Sometimes buy fair trade or locally produced. Ask for it in the shop. Let that side of the economy grow a little. It is something YOU can do. Today and every day. It isn't even difficult. The world isn't black or white. More a dark shade...

It is good to lay the blame on them. But why should they change their ways if you at the same time keep rewarding them by giving them your money?

    mora classic

There are some special models around. I found this: A Mora Classic Original. 98 mm laminated blade. Leather sheath. Almost mirror finish. No secondary micro bevel, for craft use ... I bought two. One as a gift to a helpful neighbour, and one for myself. Do you have the same tradition of...

    Technology

To me the problem isn't technology, but very cheap and fast transportation that allow us to ignore and/or hide the negative side of our consumption and technology. Cheap transportation means that it is easy to have a very large distances between production, consumption and disposal. Typically...
