Hunting knife used as bushcraft knife?

Some hunting knives are designed especially for skinning (rounded tip) or for opening up the animal (gut hook) or are designed to cut joints (thinned out tip) or have other features to make them more suitable for some tasks related specifically to hunting. But usually most "normal" hunting...

Uses for an old tree saw and rip saw?

Learn to play the saw! I can play simple tunes like twinkle twinkle little star, on a wood saw I have. At least I think it sounds like twinkle twinkle little star... I play it with a small piece of wood as a small hammer. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musical_saw

Advice in buying a bushcraft knife

Most good ferro rods comes with a dedicated striker. No need to use a knife. Could even be dangerous. And there is nothing that says that you have to have a ferro rod. A box of matches in a zip lock plastic bag will work fine. Or why not a BIC lighter? Ferro rods are made by hi tech...

    Folding Saws!

I agree that a bow saw is nice to have. And hard to beat in volume work. But it is hardly folding... I have an EKA Combi Saw Viking 17" that is small and easy to carry in the backpack, and quick to deploy. Very pleased with it. There is also a 21" inch model. The 18" Sawvivor seems to be a...

what's your prefered pocket knife? + pics!

No, I hardly ever baton with any knife. Especially not with a folder. It might work, but I wont test it. I might baton in an emergency with a Mora or my Fällkniven A1. I prefer to split wood with an axe or an hydraulic log splitter, depending on the dimensions and where I am. And cut with a...

    scandinavian sauce for meatballs

I usually squish one or two failed meatballs in the frying pan and fry them in extra butter till brown, with a pinch of sugar added for colouring. Then take aside and wisk down some flour and then add milk. Add half a stock cube. Bring to a boil while stirring. Salt and pepper to taste. Extra...

Firesteel on sheath? yay or nay?

I think sheaths with/without a loop for a ferrocerium rod are two very different products. I would suggest that you should market them as such. Ferrocerium is a high tech man made material. I don't see that as any more safe or "bushcrafty" than using matches or a lighter. I have a ferrocerium...

    Mora Companion

There is a big overlap between the two product lines. But they are designed and intended for different market segments and sales channels, with *slightly* different pricing. ;)

what's your prefered pocket knife? + pics!

My current favorites. EKA Swede 88, 8 and 10. Stainless steel and great ergonomics. No "tactical" look. Just great tools. The 8 and 10 has seen quite a bit of use. I am a little more careful with the 88. The 88 is a very elegant light weight slicer. The 8 and 10 are more robust bruisers.

More dehydrating, the making of a meal for camp! Pic heavy!

I dehydrate minced meat. Preferably lean beef to avoid fat that may go rancid. I fry it without any fat in a non-stick pan, and then dry it. Great addition to any soup. Great for fast cooking. Leeks are great for dehydrating. I cut mine thinner than on the pictures here. When they are dry...

Recommend me a rechargeble LED torch for walking the dog.

I would recommend a Fenix LD22 and a charger with 4 aa nimh batteries. It runs off two aa batteries, so if you get him 4 batteries he can charge 2 of them at any time and keep the torch fully charged at all times. Runtime is very good. On full blast (190 lumens) it easily lasts a full walk...

    My DIY Hammock Stand

I hope you don't mind me posting my efforts here? Interesting enough we seem to have used the same basic idea to keep the stand from collapsing: Two skewed A-frames or triangles. I made mine last year, It is useful both for trying out my DD-Hammock and for just taking an summer afternoon nap in...

GPS for logging photo locations and mapping route.... with altimeter? Help please

I am very fond of my Garmin Oregon 550t. It has a built in camera that is good enough for pics to publish on Google Earth, and the pics are automatically geotagged. The easiest way to store a location is to take a picture. Later you can browse to that picture and start navigation to it. Here...

    Turboflame Lighter (Lakeland Bushcraft)

Your physics are a bit off, I'm afraid. And ged is quite right. Your reasoning about pressure and volume is only true if the amount of gas, in gas form, is constant. That is not the case here. Some of the gas is in liquid form and it will "boil" off to keep the pressure up. As long as there is...

    Blanket(s) or sleeping bag ?

I use a underblanket and a unzipped cheap spring-summer-autumn sleeping bag as a cover. I stick my feet in the bottom, and pull the rest over me. Very nice and not any more restrictive due to the sleeping bag. When this pic was taken it had been -8 celsius during the night, and I was warm and...

    Hammocking at home

I have plenty of trees for my DD-Hammock, but at home I don't have any really good spot to hang a hammock. So I built a hammock stand last summer. It was used again this summer. It is possible to hang my DD-Hammock in it, but I have a more "civilian" hammock as well.

    Knife sharpening items (portable)
