Cheers for the links Mark - I reckon a ventile one is beyond my budget! I checked the DD one a while ago (being a satisfied hammock customer) but it's pretty heavy at 1kg as is the '58 pattern. However a difference of 500g compared to other 'lightweight' versions isn't really that much I guess...
Yep I really like the idea of this - classic multi-purpose kit approach. I've been hankering after a US poncho and liner for a while and your idea makes that combo even more useful.
Thanks for sharing - I'll be giving this one a go...
Indeed - I got an M sized one but it's still pretty substantial. I guess at least I've always got a shelter on me when I'm wearing it though. The pockets go on for ever - I'm still findings things in them from the last time I wore it
Anyone got any further recommendations/ suggestions for the best types of issue poncho? I've heard that the Italian army ones are good because they are very lightweight; rubberized German ones good because they're virtually indesctructible and unlikely to let water in. Also heard that the...
Yep I had a bash at treating my Swannie bushshirt and got great results after getting similar advice from Toddy. Been out in the rain in it and it really makes a big difference - I just made up the lanolin mixture in a small jar with some hot water mixed up. Then put some lukewarm water in the...

I use one of Wanderinstar's excellent Coccoons (have a search of the threads for full details) - it slips around the whole hammock like a big sleeping bag. Very quick and easy to rig (I use shock cord with mini krabs) and extremely warm - I used it in January this year at -3C and was perfectly...
I spotted this item a while back as well, but went for a charcoal-coloured Mosgiel bushshirt instead (quite unusual and suitable for non-woods environments as well). No connection to seller (etc, etc) but she was great and despatched the item with no issues and very swiftly - the item was in...
Well that's me sold - I'll definitely try some whisky using yesterday's harvest. By the way, many thanks Toddy for your great pointers on Swanndri/ wool care and weatherproofing - I successfully treated my bushshirt and it's come out brilliantly!
Yep have been having surprising sloe-hunting success down here in London too; picked another kilo today during an unexpected bimble. 2 bottles of gin already kicked off; hadn't thought of whisky but sounds very nice.
Ditto!! After reading through this great thread I saw that I absolutely needed one and ordered it from the German gent via bushcraftsman's link. It arrived this morning after only 3 days wait so the supplier's done a sterling job.
Looking forward to trying it out soon and incorporating the...
Couldn't agree more, and there's no way on earth I would rely on a compass app on an iPhone - I've seen first hand quite how bad they can be. This seems to me to be an echo of the electronic GPS vs compass/ map argument - no denying GPS gizmos are handy, but they should never be your only way of...
Hi Neumo. Really depends on whether you have a jailbroken device - if you do, iPhone Browser does what it says on the tin and is very straightforward and reliable. If you don't, Apple have intentionally made it quite difficult to do this as they don't want owners to be able to play around with...
Easy tiger. Only the 3GS (which I don't own) has a compass and unless your phone is over 5 years old I'd expect it to have a 'not proper' camera. iPhones are tools, nothing else, and quite useful to some people. I don't think anyone is suggesting replacing 'real kit' with one - it's just handy...
