    Starter 12 gauge Shotgun

Has anyone mentioned length of pull and stock shape? For me English style beaver tails kick harder...

    swanndri bush shirt

Unless people know what it is people will think you look like some sort of medieval archer! Wear it with shorts and everyone outside NZ will think you are a total nutter :) You have to get over the fact that they are not the sort of clothes that will go unnoticed most places you would go outside...

    Starter 12 gauge Shotgun

There are quite a few nice Turkish o/u guns on the market. Some nice guns. And I wouldn't dismiss Baikals either. Good solid Russian engineering!

What to do in New Zealand?

And something to do for free: the Tongariro Crossing. Legendary mountain day walk, on the Central Plateau (near Taupo). Possibly one for all the family?

What to do in New Zealand?

And here are my top tips for bushy souvenirs. Farmlands farm supply store which is in virtually every town (not Farmers department store!) best and cheapest place to buy Swanndris and Blundstones. And really good wool socks. You can pick up a merino singlet for under forty bucks. Hunting...

What to do in New Zealand?

No problem :) Do have a serious think about where you're going to go, as both islands in three weeks could be a challenge, and you can end up with a lot of driving which is never as restful as you think... You never seem to be able to cover as much ground as you expect! A few more things to mull...

What to do in New Zealand?

That bike race is the Cemetery Circuit at Wanganui.... It's on every Boxing Day. Basically it's a bike race around the town and attracts quite a lot of visitors. There's usually a Jet Sprints race on a couple of days later if you're a petrol head. Actually I would recommend Wanganui as a...

    Toughest boots bar none?

I would love to know if anyone has used or uses clogs like that.... I saw some in a shop in York about twenty years ago and thought they looked pretty cool.

    What's in your hip flask?

Moonshine. Home distilled by me. Sugar wash, fermented to a strong wine, boiled up in a 25 litre pot still, which gives over 6 litres at 45+%. Then twice filtered. Flavoured to taste. I have a whiskey kit that means I can reasonably well copy different styles of whiskies - different Scotch...

    Uni choice

I'd say choose the COURSE that you will enjoy the most. I went to Bath Uni to do European studies, but the course was full of literature and economics and I hated it. I basically failed the first year, and then went to UEA and did Modern European History, which I loved. Included all the really...

    MVP Jacket & Windproof Jacket/Smock

I have an Arktis Zoot Suit bought in about 1989 - still useful and going strong! I think the Stowaway shirt is basically the same top. It's been used for running, spare dry clothing, wind proof layer under a combat jacket when I wasn't supposed to be wearing any Gucci kit, emergency jacket etc...

    Ammo Boots/Hobnail Boots

http://lastrite.co.nz/products/27-tussock-hob-nail-boot these guys do a hobnail boot - blooming expensive! Not sure where hobail boots fit into life these days, but to be fair I hanker after a pair too! You could look at a pair of traditional clogs which are a bit cheaper, traditional English...

Best and worst boots you have owned.

Best boots by far, although not the "4x4" boots most people are talking about have to be my Blundstones (500 I think). I have had maybe five pairs over twenty years and they just get more hard wearing. My current pair is at least six years old. A great every day or flat country boot. I have had...

    Boots for South Africa

Decent veldskoen. You need boots or shoes that will resist acacia thorns which will rip through most soles. Yes lots of people are happy with Teva type sandals but it's not pretty seeing a big thorn go through a toe! Courteney boots are great, and Rogues aren't bad either, but they have...

    Favourite socks?

Those commando socks are the best for me and last for years, literally. Wash well and good for long hikes. They are what the army (used?) to be issued. I also recommend Tho Lo light hikers which are very good in hot weather, but have to be washed well every day as they are 100% synthetic.

    Fak questions.

Cling film rather than a bag. The whole point of cling film is that it does not allow air into contact with the burn and all those damaged nerve endings. And straight forward cling film from the supermarket, you don't need special medical stuff - this is what I have had issued on operations in...

    Snow camouflage suit ID

Not seen the film but Cabelas has a few different snow camo suits. Or you could look at Russian army surplus. The cheap option is a disposable painters/SOCO oversuit

Ridgeline Bush Shirt... Do I/ Dont I?

The bush shirts I have seen are a bit like a fleecey Swanndri copy, and the sizing was huge. I have Ridgeline gear cos it's cheap enough here in NZ, and it does the job well enough, but it's not like its a designer label! If you're not sure, carry on looking.

    Advice on stock refinishing advice!

I "built" a Leeman Great Plains Rilfe in .54 calibre last winter and tried a number of finishes but in the end I used high quality furniture oil rubbed in with superfine steel wool. I bought stain but didn't use it... I got so caught up in the minute details of the finish I didn't look at the...

Advice please poncho or gortex jacket ?.

Back on the PVC thing you can get a heavy duty Helly Hansen coat for around fifty quid, which would be pretty heavy duty and would cope with any UK weather. Similar Hellys are the default favourite for many Alaskan guides. If you got caught out overnight in some crappy weather you'd possibly...
