Man dies on wilderness survival course

The fatality was six months ago, but no follow-up stories that I can find. Yesterday's news. Turns out Buschow died the day after the incident where a 16-year-old girl, Elisa Santry, died on an Outward Bound course...

Man dies on wilderness survival course

To your point: In WW II, the U.S. went to considerable effort to give "desert training" to units about to be sent to open the front in North Africa. The training included "learning" to function with reduced water rations. Follow-on units who had been "deprived" of this training proved tp...

But you were correct, mate. His first posting was to the 13th Hussars in India. He served in southern Africa years later.

    Ultimate Survival

But do twenty-year-olds TEACH survival to other members of 21 SAS? I had imagined some scarred old vet in that role.

    Ultimate Survival

Let me ask you folks in the UK about one point. In his "official" biography, Mr. Grylls says that for three years he was a "Specialist Combat Survival Instructor and Patrol Medic." This would be in the age range 20-23. Isn't that a tad young?

    mora too thin?

I suspect that what a good quality thicker blade provides is a degree of insurance against abusive technique -- at the cost of some cutting efficiency (and money). I witnessed several (four IIRC) Camillus-made "Ka-Bars" broken in batoning by students at a mountain and desert survival...

    Thermarest copy

I do not see it mentioned in the linked product's description, but an important feature is full bonding of the outside of the foam slab to the outer, air-tight cover. Some non-Thermorest products lack such bonding. Attempting to "help" inflation by blowing into these non-bonded products...

    Bull Dog Brand?

I recently was able to purchase a three-pot cooking set (apx. 1, 2, 3 ltrs.) at a "garage sale" for $2.00 NIB. It is labeled "Made in England Bull Dog Brand" -- all around the image of a Bull Dog. The lad minding the sale at that time thought it was about fifteen years old. Anyone ever...

Goretex, as great as they say?

At least on this side of the Big Pond, "water repellant" does not mean it will keep out heavy or constant rain. For that, you need something rated as "waterrpoof." Barring breaches in the Gore-Tex film, it does keep out the outside moisture. Good point about design, rik. I would not even...

    Nato Matchless Fireset

As do many others, I carry cotton balls pre-smeared with vasaline - which doens't stop using them on cracked lips. :D I use a 35mm film container to carry them in.

Goretex, as great as they say?

One more vote for Andy's advice plus Adam's addendum. I have given up on Gore-Tex for winter outings here unless an unexpected warm spell drives temps above freezing. Otherwise, I get condensation inside the Gore-Tex shell that turns to ice when I stop being active, unless I change out...

    Bushcraft knife

When you get past " You must be making it all up because I don't agree with it," the most common, coherent criticism of Mr. Stamp is that science is inapplicable to evaluating knives due to uncontrollable variables. He does publishe his results on a website...

    Bushcraft knife

It appears from my limited experience that the way to keep a D2 blade sharp is "little and often." Never let it go completely dull. I strop my EDC D2 (Queen "Mountain Man") on cardboard after each use. It has remained sharp. As to Mr. Stamp, he is apparently a Phd in Materials Science...
