Bivi, Bivvy, Bivvie, Tent, Camping poles?

Woody110 - a picture is much better than my sketch. Option 1 in post #15 That is a good shelter & 'sit-up-able' in.

Bivi, Bivvy, Bivvie, Tent, Camping poles?

Have you considered a single pole ? Something like an old NHS Aluminium 'crutch' or walking stick is easily adapted/cut down/modified, has adjustable height and is lightweight. There are load of different 'tarp tents' that can be built with a single pole. Hopefully the 3 examples I've sketched...

    TentMeals - High Energy Health

For breakfast they look very expensive (for what they are) at £3.80 each (500Kcals) Have you considered 'Porridge Pots' ? They have 214 Kcals, and are complete with powdered milk, simply add 150-180ml of boiling water and with the cost about 35p (3 for £1) from the likes of Poundstretcher, B&M...

    Bulletproof sleeping pad

I have found a 2nd use for my 'seat-pad' (£1.50 from China via Ebay) Weight 25 grams (1 oz) 8mm - 10mm thick Folded size: 137mm * 95 mm * 58 mm I am a 200lb side-sleeper and find that my hip is 'always' almost grounded except with the heaviest thick foam sleeping pad (which are too heavy for...

Need a wind screen design for stove

I folded my edges over to make it more rigid. About 1/2" folded over twice gives a 1/2" 'border' with 4 times thickness and makes it nice and 'stiff' but still bendable.

Need a wind screen design for stove

I just bought a humungous 'disposable Turkey Cooking Tray' (the tray is disposable, not the turkey, - but the Turkey will be disposed of later) I think the cost was about £1 - £1.50 or so. Cut off all of the 'shape and edging' to be left with a big rectangle, folded the edges over and over to...

They shall not grow old .........

Despite all of the 'war & horrors' it was the personal comments that really resonated with me : When discussing the 'toilet trench' with the pole laid over it - the comment 'we had no toilet paper we just had to use out hand, and then as we had no water we had to be careful what we did with out...

Tyre and steel rims for building wooden wheels?

I'm not quite sure what your question is. Are you looking to source a 'tyre' for your existing rim, or a rim and tyre ? Are you looking to buy 'new' or asking if anyone has any lying around. If looking for a 'new' source then Equestrian 'carriage' makers are where I have sourced the 'tyre'...

First bushcraft course kit recommendations - Woodland Ways survival week March

I guess it depends on if they are offering a 'Survival Course' or a 'Bush Craft Course'. Looking at their 'kit list' their appears to be very little 'survival' involved. When I did my Survival Course with the Army Youth Team (many years ago) we arrived at barracks, our rucksacks were emptied...

    Adventure Food

These are the Freeze Dried meals I use. Most variations are around 800Kcal, but the "Expedition Foods" range also includes a 1000Kcal range either as an 'extreme meal' or as a smaller meal for two people. I doubt that these UK produced meals would be available in Canada, but, you never know.

Have you considered the Sawyer water filter ? Do a you tube search there are 100s of videos and technical debates. In order to improve the 'taste' I have included a Carbon filter into my 'water-kit'. The Sawyer takes out the 'nasties' whilst the carbon filter takes out the 'taste'. The...

    Stove comparison

That's good to know, but the downside (for me) would be its something else to have to 'carry-in', and, the wood stove is just my JIC stove. The small gasifier stoves I have looked at on ebay seem to be about 450g in weight, add in some cat litter and I can easily carry another gas stove and...

    Stove comparison

Great (and real-life) review. Disappointed to see how much 'looking after' the gasifier stoves take - it doesn't look like you can set them running and leave them for more than a 'couple of minutes'. My 'normal' stove is a 99p (ebay 'Pocket-Rocket knock off, when there was a 'price war'...

Milk alternative for when there's no fridge...

Yes - coffee mate has never seen a cow. Main ingredients : Glucose Syrup, Palm Kernel Oil, Milk Proteins, Stabilisers. I am pretty choosey about 'tastes' and must say, Coffee Mate (whilst not being as good as fresh milk) is quite acceptable and better than 'sterilised milk'

Milk alternative for when there's no fridge...

"Coffee Mate" 180g 'tub' at Poundland (guess how much) 1 teaspoon to 100ml of water makes up 'milk' Add a couple of tea-spoons to a 300ml mug of tea for 'normal strength tea with milk'. Normally has about a 12 month Best Before date. Keep it on the boat, keep it at home and keep some in the...

Head Torches - useful and cheap

Very happy with the Poundland Head Torches, complete with batteries at - you guessed it £1 Good enough, for dog walking, night hiking, map reading and cheap enough to lose, smash or throw away when the batteries go flat (or you could always put in 3x new AAA batteries).

Car magazine winter tyre test, all season tyre looked the best option - any views?

I have found (and was taught on various off-road training courses) that the worst / hardest surface to get traction is wet grass and if it is wet grass on a slope - almost impossible. If grass is your primary driving requirement then get real 'chunky' cleated ties that will cut thru the grass...
