    Source for straps?

I'm tinkering about with a design for a backpack which is just straps and a frame, I think popping all my bedrolls onto an external frame and then covering it with something is going to be a lot faster and more efficient for the kind of stealth camping I do (esp when I break camp in the rain...

Voluntarily handing in a large blade to the UK police

I take care of the overgrown path next to my house - there are some nightshades growing there and lots of critters, so I hope that my work keeping a path through prevents the council chopping the whole lot flat. I've also taken a spade to it, as it's on a slope, to keep the path more path like

    A great night's sleep

What are the must have things for you to get - not just an adequate or safe sleep out of doors, but a really refreshing one? I've been feeling weird all moot, I've slept so poorly, which is odd because I've slept out entire summers before and liked it much better than inside. I remembered when...

Voluntarily handing in a large blade to the UK police

The rules about the zombie knifes remind me of the rules that killed off the free party scene in the 90s, The law banned 'any gathering of 20 or more people where: Which is kind of hilarious if it wasn't so needlessly destructive as well. Looks like we need to ban all concerts aside from Enya...

Anyone around to help with a tent?

Thank you! I prevailed and am feeling very smug at my survival skills right now. If I'm ever on the run behind enemy lines after the apocalypse and all I have on hand is a 4m boutique bell tent plus bunting for shelter, I will have nothing to fear XD Looking forward to meeting you all tomorrow ^_^

Anyone around to help with a tent?

I have boldly come to the moot alone, with a bivvy bag and a bell tent, but I'm not sure one-man bell tent erection is going to go well. Is anyone about and feeling skilled and social to help put it up? If so, propose a meeting location that's easy to identify on the campsite, and come over...

    EDC - Money

I was learning about this in one of David Harvey's lectures on Capital, which are on youtube - the problem, in part, was that gold is not a neutral, abstract thing, it's an actual commodity, so if you have a gold standard then 'which countries have gold' is a live issue. As for the topic of the...

Help me get my pack weight down

Back from the woods, but had a lousy night - the weight but also the bulk, and the faff of it all. The big rucksack is wholly filled with the sleeping bag, which I can't get packed down much further. & this is before I add any food or a pan to cook it in. I can't work out where to make savings...

    Car sleeping?

The big issue with car sleeping is condensation, which for me builds up quick after 10 minutes of sitting in the car with a book.

Man disturbs peregrine nest with laser, does he get off lightly?

I think a community resolution is always better than the alternatives. You can't un-do an action - but expressing remorse, committing not to do it again, being willing to face the consequences, & putting money towards making it right. Can't hope for better than that, really. & it saves the...

You are going on a 3 day trip and have to stay UK legal so what do you carry?

Always be careful when talking to the police in situations like this - they are trained to get you to incriminate yourself. The laws for Stop and Search are that they need to suspect 1. a person matching your description of 2. carrying a particular object. a reasonable belief to suspect that...

    Car sleeping?

I'm very supportive of the shift to electric vehicles, but I wouldn't get a tesla - they are horrible quality, designed to skirt safety regs in all sorts of ways. Apparently it's all electric inside with no mechanical failsafes? Lots of bad stories coming out of the US - people getting trapped...

All poultry subject to compulsory registration

tbh the big risk for bird flu is always going to be more likely in mass-production (thousands of birds crammed into little spaces where disease can spread, imported and exported all over the world) than in 'a handful of chickens in my back yard' production

Fire design in tiny kelly kettles

Thank you for thinking of me and my poor fires while off on adventure! It looks marvellous out there. The pictures really help get a mental image of what my setup should be. Some followup questions if that's ok Am I understanding this right - the goal is to get a bit of the ferro rod off and...

Fire design in tiny kelly kettles

Hi all! I am struggling with fire-setting in my small kelly kettle. The space to build the fire is about palm sized, and 1.5 inches deep. You've got to get fuel in there, but also enough of a lattice for air to pass through you've got to stand fuel up somehow so it doesn't touch the rim so...

    winter tent condensation

So i've done my first winter(ish) camp out, in a bog standard 2 man tent. I DIY'd a ground mat from reflective packaging, a yoga mat, a wool blanket and down duvet, and put my fesca sleeping bag on top. wonderful night's sleep, blissful. I was struck by the level of condensation that built up...

Arthritis adaptions that you have had to make.

ohhhh, now i literally just saw a TA Outdoors video where he demonstrates a BlastMatch ferrorod - you press your thumb down on the device to hold the metal against the rod, and then stab the rod into the ground to create the striking action. It is therefore used one-handed It might be an option...

Land access - seeking and finding permission

Who Owns England is an interesting project, because apparently it isn't a *requirement* to document publically who owns any given piece of land, and therefore it can require Freedom of Information requests and sniffing about. One of the aims of the project, which I agree with, is you'd expect...

    Kelly Kettle got bashed?

Next question for people who have a kettle: The base of the stove is convex - is it designed like this, or is this because I gave it a bash/it got knocked, & do i need to tap it back into shape. & is there anything I need to do to reduce the chance of this happening in future? Anything I can...
