What do you want to have on Bushcraft UK?

Aside from that, I've actually been thinking about a black and white paper poster that members could print to advertise the Bushmoot events, but equally we could make one for the forum itself. It strikes me that bushcrafty types are pretty offline anyway, and I can think of loads of places...

What do you want to have on Bushcraft UK?

This is a good idea, tho it's worth doing some research as well because these social media companies work for them, not you. When accounts don't have interaction, the algorithm disfavours them - in some cases, even if someone is following you, they won't necessarily see all your posts. Social...

What do you want to have on Bushcraft UK?

This topic has come up on Dreamwidth, a really nice independent social media site. Whenever bad stuff goes on on tumblr everyone will say, 'let's all move to Dreamwidth!' and nobody ever does. Part of that is the network effect that everyone wants to be where everybody is, but a big part of it...

Love cooking. Stuck for what to make...

My go to is tortilla wraps. Fry some onion and spices, and then add quorn chunks or chicken. Once they're mostly done, throw in some veg: strips of pepper, or whatever you have to hand. You could add rice or beans to pad it out a bit. When it's well on the way, add tomato puree and more...

    A bit of Whittling

I rememebr you carving it - it's wonderful to see the set. I love the abstraction too, the way they're sort of tall and still similar to trees. Very powerful!

    So.. what happened...

What works for me is an affordable and unglamorous Mora chisel knife - perfect for batoning, feathering sticks, levering bark off, even as a chisel. I can bash it about without guilt and save my nicer knife for nicer things.

    So.. what happened...

@Astrochicken I would certainly recommend you come along to one of the moots, a lot of very friendly and VERY knowledgable people, as well as an opportunity to live wild for a little while I'm a big advocate of garden bushcraft tbh. If you think of it as a survival skill, then learning to make...

How do you feel about people joining to post Surveys?

I feel pretty strongly opposed to commercial surveys - it's so easy for hobby spaces to become overrun by commercial interests & for those spaces to be seen as untapped client bases instead of social spaces, and it's a bit gross. (Although I don't think anyone would begrudge long-time...

    So.. what happened...

I really love that way of approaching it, yes! Like a knife or a hat or a kettle, none of them nag for my attention, they just stay until I need them.

    Bush clamps

Does anyone have advice or a resource on how to DIY your own clamps in a bush situation? I often find myself doing little sawing jobs in the wood or in my kitchen when I can't get to a tootlbox quickly, and I've been daydreaming about counter-weighted systems and strapping things down with cord...

    So.. what happened...

The issue is that most people have moved over to the Big Four social media, and those are deliberately designed to keep people 'on site'. Some of them even deliberately hide posts with links in. Those sites are designed to be more sticky and grabby, it plays havoc with anyone who's a bit...

Auctioning a Winter Moot ticket for Charity

I haven't got my ticket yet, but wholly intend to come - so I'll start the bidding at £50. Who's next? ^_^

    Woodland Custodianship

Always nice re-reading and keeping up with this thread. Today's plan at the woods I help with is to remove the sand supporting the shape of our cob pizza oven, at our site on the outskirts of the wood. I've not got as far as looking out the window this morning to check for snow... I suspect...

    What did you buy today?

Decluttering a house for a friend and dug up one of those urns for keeping hot water warm and dispensing it. Not for hikes of course, but carrying the first hot tea to a campsite to save on time & labour or heating water over a fire, I'm very excited.

    Any one snow camping?

I really want to - I've camped in frost before - but unfortunately, health prevents. Too sleepy to get up and pack my rucksack, so certainly too sleepy for a difficult camp out! I get so twitchy indoors in the winter but even with decent kit, going outside in the wet and cold is a big hurdle...

    Woodland Custodianship

Thsn Thanks for sharing - I linked it to the people who make decisions in the woodland I help manage (I just do the lifting, shifting & kettle haha)

    What did you buy today?

... can I ask you about the bulb thing? Is that all bulbs or just some? My beloved Lumie 'go to bed slowly sunset' lamps, the old halogen bulbs are no longer supplied anywhere. I've kept the lamps tho, it would be wonderful if it was possible to convert the fittings

    Emergency Preparedness Guides

I guess that Scandinavian countries, similar to middle of nowhere American towns, have more of a 'natural' preparedness mindset as part of their daily lives. If it's liable to be seriously snowy or emergency services are hours away etc, preparedness is an extension of how you're living anyway.

    Kelly kettle hacks

If it's no trouble, then I would like the plug lids - I'll report back if they're a useful addition or not. I've just learned netting specificslly to strap my water carriers on the outside of my rucksack. Thank you for continuing advice about my fire skills ^_^ today I managed to re-light my...

    Kelly kettle hacks

I've tried the pull to scrape technique and it still goes everywhere, and takes forever XD I thought I must have a duff ferro rod or maybe one that's too short, for the second time running, but the guys I know have borrowed it and they make a beautiful shower of sparks so it's def something in...
