Is a psk really needed in the UK?

Well, we are British! The psk essentials are a few tea bags & a book to read until it all blows over.

    Bushcraft Events Calendar

There's also Lavuu on the Farm, although I think that's another August one

Government consultation on banning large knives and machetes

What kills me is them wasting money & time on this instead of, say, funding after school clubs... rapid access to mental health support...early years support for parents who are struggling to know how to parent...higher minimum wage and shorter working days so all parents can stay involved with...

    Playing it safe

Does the setting work well? I would be anxious about putting any of my woolen stuff in a washing machine

    Bird feeding tips

yeah :/ it's really difficult. As you say, its an unnatural way for them to behave in the wild. It's the same for bee hotels. the wildlife gardening book i mentioned upthread has a whole section on how to clean out the hotel & take care of your overwintering bees, & I was like hmm. no i do not...

    What did you buy today?

I'm also thinking about, I was actually making a net hammock from a 1970s craft book and you include two wide bit of wood to like, hold the hammock in a rectangular shape so it doesn't banana. I'm wondering if I could add those to my hammock, to make adding a blanket easier

    Bird feeding tips

Yeah I bet that's OK. Presumably it's easier for the RSPB to get the message out of 'don't do it' than 'routinely clean your feeders', as I'm sure most people won't have the enthusiasm for that. I'm making a bird feeder atm and I'm thinking about including a plastic base that can be removed...

    What are you currently reading?

Talking Pictures TV is so wonderful. I discovered it while having the worst week of my life and it's just so dreamy to have a full day of films you've never heard of, but all of them interesting. Read an interview with the people who run it, it's a real passion project, they do it out of their...

    Bird feeding tips

Oh while we are discussing this, apparebtly the RSPB are recommending against flat bird feeders right now. Disease is going around and killing the finches and they're catching it from each other at bird tables.

    What did you buy today?

Just got a 2nd hand hammock ^_^ it takes my weight OK & tested it among some lovely beech trees over the hill. I like the idea of having something I can set up to sit on while adventuring, but I don't like that it's almost as fiddly to sleep in as my hooped bivi. I'm disenchanted by the prospect...

    What did you buy today?

At one point I had two, very basic supermarket insulated flasks with lil cups on...and then, imperceptibly, I had one, and goodness knows where the other had gone. I try not to buy brand new things so this was a right hassle. Today, I stumbled across more or less the exact same thing in a junk...

    Bird feeding tips

Think about non bird feeder stuff, maybe? I've got the Wildlife Gardening by Kate Bradbury and it has stuff about what different birds eat, in terms of insect life and berries. A pond, and things supporting insects, as well as thinking about enough berry/seed cover to last all year round might...

    Warm but open tarps?

Any recommendations for how to set up a tarp to keep the warm in, but also allow you to be social around a fire? Normally I'd just go for a lean to in case of rain

Hello folks - Beginner bow drilling

I've not tried bow drill yet, so I cant speak to how good these articles are, but I came across this 5 part series on 'what isn't quite right about my bow drilling' and I thought that was an interesting approach. One useful thing I learned from Rich is that he set himself the challenge of...

Trip Report Meteors in the snow

A friend new to wild camping mentioned by chance that she wanted to see more meteors, so we raced out to see the Quadrantids over y Bannau Brycheniog. Braved ice on the roads and got to my secret sleeping spot, of which I shall not speak. The sky was hazy, and meteors were few. The ground...

    Primitive Tech Tree

Ooh I love that description of the thought processes of tool creation. This bit in particular reminded me of a stunning bit in a ray mears book where he describes once seeing two branches rubbing against one another in the wind and making smoke, and wonders whether ancient man ever saw this and...

What to do with partially boggy land?

Pallets sound like a decent stopgap to me, but I wouldn't let them rot down into the soil as they are often chemically treated - you shouldn't burn them, for example.

WinterMoot 2024 - Festival of Outdoor Cookery

I am booked at the moot are we inviting any druids to sort the whole 'February weather' situation out...? I have a huge list of projects to finish ahead of the event and 80% are warm layers.

    Money

In terms of privacy, people in reciept of some state benefits, the government are allowed to look directly at what you're buying. It's very dehumanising. And Im sure they have mechanisms by which they can snoop on anyone if they like. So that's a reason to use cash. Not because one has...

    Money

That would be an excellent idea. My mum (in school in the 1960s) was taught house-whiffery (that's how she pronounced it - how to be a housewife) and tbh I think young people of all genders would benefit from that. Understanding financial things and how to budget, as well as other life skills...
