    That is kind of cute.

    Authentic glue for leathercraft.

Medieval leather worker probably would have boiled collagen out of hide scraps and used that as his glue. As I understand various other collagen sources could and were used, fish, tendons. Apparently keratin (hooves) can also be hydrolyzed into glue, I have no idea how these two sources...

    Shelf stable protein

Freeze dried rations is the closest I can think of just now. Just to cover the headline, pure amino acids are quite long lasting if stored dry. A mix of essential amino acids can be bought, taste is not that great and it should not be considered a meal but it covers protein. :D

    Seeding mistletoe

About 25 years ago mistletoe suddenly appeared in southwest Finland, now at around 250 locations. Before that it was unknown during written history. A certain thrush species is strongly under suspicion of importing that foreign plant species ...

Nikwax TX.Direct - does it work?

Hmmm ... I think it has been around at least 25 years, I think John Fenna might have some practical experience on Sympatex in cloths.

Nikwax TX.Direct - does it work?

Not quite so, Sympatex and some PU coatings operate on a different principle. They can pass water as liquid through but they work best with a fairly large temp gradient. Their breathability is not as good as some of the holey membranes but they are mechanically stronger. Sympatex at least...

Nikwax TX.Direct - does it work?

It can actually prevent any hydrophobic substance from working (hydrophobicity = beading), almost all non-pure-soap detergents contain surfactants (substances that lower surface tension of water) that is there to help wetting. So it helps wetting even at very small residues on the washed...

New M23 from maker of Sissipuukko.

The M23 seems to have a blade shape somewhat optimized for whittling, all pros' blades I have seen look very much like that. I have not used that knife but held one briefly, it did fit the hand quite nicely.

    Favourite Sandwich

:) Some do some don't, I often make a two slice sandwich instead of two separate ones. Lately I have changed from rye bread to oat, eat very few wheat ones.

    What did you buy today?

Testing for cadmium might not be a bad idea either.

    interesting

Nobody who has served takes military HDBKs as they were Gods (chose your own) word. In this case the article did not quote the actual study or MILHDBK but some hearsay.

    interesting

The subject is important one though. How to stay warm in weather that cools one, also how to control the insulation to avoid overheating and sweating. What kind of clothing seems to work best and what is non functional or even dangerous.

    interesting

A quote I found after some search: " The study itself is hard to pinpoint, although there were at least several experiments of that kind, with a very small-scope one (three cases in total) conducted by Gerd Froese and Alan Burton in 1957. The main issue is that the body heat loss experiments...

    interesting

Pedantic, that's me especially concerning definition of terms; a fluid carrying heat somewhere ... I still think most of this discussion is moot as I am still almost certain that US army studied a fully clothed man in military winter gear. That guy is actually losing a lot of heat through his...

    interesting

A slightly differing opinion here, blood when moving around carries heat by kind of convection but of course the process is different from warm air rising in a cooler surrounding.

    interesting

Hmm ... I think C_C is correct based on my own extremely subjective observations. On the heat loss thing I think "The scientists" are just bad readers or don't understand. US army has no interest in studying heat loss on naked soldiers but lots in studying properly dressed ones. My first...

Is a psk really needed in the UK?

To the original question; maybe; but it would be very different from one useful in Alaska. Some kind of urban or semi urban PSK is very unlikely to do any harm.

    Stoopid jokes

A lawyer died and went to hell, he was welcomed by devil there. "Welcome loser!" The lawer thought there was little to lose so he answered: "Well, things could have gone better but at least I am not in charge and living in my fathers basement!"

    Advanced Survival course info.

Slightly but not much OT; what kind of subjects would one expect to be going through in a course like these?
