Hootchie Guylines / What kind of cord is it?

Jungle rope Hoochie cord Both equally non-descriptive names that tell you nothing about the cord. Any retailer can put that label on any cord they like if it might vaguely be used for guy lines. Not knocking the linked product’s suitability, just pointing out that labelling isn’t the same as...

My probably annual winter jacket recommendation thread!!

Denial. Wanting something. Making countless posts on multiple threads over multiple years about wanting something, but not buying it. Not because you can’t afford one (at worst, save for three years, done) but because you want to optimise value for money, performance, looks, length, etc and...

Make a shed from wood in woodland or buy cheap wooden one?

That lean-to looks like it would be miserable in rain or drizzle. wouldn't take much breeze from the wrong direction to blow wet onto your kit. I am also curious about what smoke from a fire will do when surrounded by a wall like that. Typically a lean-to is recommended to be parallel to...

My probably annual winter jacket recommendation thread!!

Just pick something and buy it. If you are struggling with "outdoor" brands, try the more general stuff, like: https://www.landsend.co.uk/Men/Coats_Jackets/ix-11360?start=0&sz=48 or https://www.rohan.co.uk/mens/jackets/?productListFilters=&productListPgNo=1 The endless analysis paralysis...

Crucible Steel, maker of all CPM alloys, files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection

They offered tool steels that were aimed at industry too, not just knife making. I thought that was the main direction of their business. Steel for things like extrusion tooling, or dies. High abrasion resistance, high hardness. A small mill would never be able to compete in production of...

Another idea; having a house built

I would recommend against you taking on a build project. There is uncertainty, disruption, plenty of chances for confrontations. While ideally the people doing the work will be lovely, honest, hard working...you could also get lazy, manipulative, argumentative, stubborn. I haven't had work...

Crucible Steel, maker of all CPM alloys, files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection

I haven't worked any of their steels, except for a little CPM154, they haven't been easy to get on this side of the pond, but I have certainly enjoyed some of them in commercial knives. Magnacut is really nice. Got it in a Lion Steel and a Spyderco. I have enjoyed RWL34 (so same as CPM154)...

Crucible Steel, maker of all CPM alloys, files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection

Saw this news this morning. https://cnycentral.com/news/local/crucible-industries-in-solvay-facing-uncertain-economic-future-could-file-for-bankruptcy Crucible are the makers of CPM steel, such things as S30V, S110V etc, 3V, Magnacut, Cruwear, and many more that are staples of the knife...

How would you fix the Homeless crisis.?

Mod hat on: Thanks to everyone participating in the spirit in which the thread was started. A few posts have been pruned, and a few more were straying close to the line, but I don't think they crossed it. Mod hat off: I have no suggestions, certainly nothing that hasn't been suggested by...

Is a psk really needed in the UK?

I admit to being somewhat disparaging of PSKs, but that has been more about the Altoid tin things where folk include fish hooks and a snare and have grand ideas about feeding themselves from the wild if they get separated from their pack while hiking the Brecon Beacons. I am all for carrying...

What do you do when it’s dark? (No not that)

Paper books. Preparing firewood for the morning. Whittling, sometimes. I don’t drink alcohol at the same time though!

How do you feel about people joining to post Surveys?

I really do not much like surveys, and as a general rule I refuse to do them. My folks are even more strictly anti-survey, which is a big help with tele-market scammers who open with “we are calling because you filled in a survey.” Occasionally I fill one in at work, maybe about training or IT...

    So.. what happened...

Genuine question. Do you have adverts appearing around, in and over threads? Sometimes stuff behaves differently for me as a moderator and I might not see something that you see. I don’t see any adverts.

    Wool anoranks?

Anorank = like an anorak, but stands up on its own and has naturally repellent qualities. ?
