    Night Owls....

Pre children I used to stay up late, now I’m shattered by 10pm When I worked a regular pattern of nights I loved it, driving home past all the people starting their day knowing a warm bed awaits.

    Essential life saving skills.

Quite possibly, I did a bit of training and it was a step up in terms of aggression and seemed to favour more aggressive but shorter contacts. It certainly worked

    Essential life saving skills.

Not sure, a lot of modern combative sport seems to base itself on Krav Maga which is very SOE.

That sounds awesome, if only I lived closer

    Essential life saving skills.

Self rescue is a number of things, treading water for a set time, floating on your back as well as climbing out of a pool using “elbow, elbow, belly, knee” Both my boys, 5 and 3 (terrible names I know) learnt it in paid for lessons

How would you fix the Homeless crisis.?

The charities I worked alongside were really only short term fixes, they would turn up in vans, offer a hot meal AND a bag with sandwiches, crisps, water, sweets (for the next meal) then leave a few hours later. Would feed hundreds of people in the Charing Cross area. Disappointingly was the...

    A tool I don’t recognise.

I don’t really know much about ditty bags, I take it a sailmaker makes his/her own? When I studied engineering years ago we had to make our own toolbox, the idea being that a foreman would see if the box was good enough to take you on. The box was a sort of show of skill- needless to say...

    A tool I don’t recognise.

In my sleep deprived state I read: “Show us the contents of yer dirty bag” Nearly got myself banned

How would you fix the Homeless crisis.?

That looks great, a far cry from the hostels and “hotels” near me

    Essential life saving skills.

Triage - scene management. A lot of traditional first aid training was one first aider and one casualty, the ability to triage a car full of people quickly really makes a difference

    Essential life saving skills.

First aid changes through collective experience, following a major incident senior medics look at why some people survived and some did not I.e were the survivors placed on their fronts/backs/sides. Did this make a noticeable difference? Fundamentally the human body hasn’t changed for a while...

How would you fix the Homeless crisis.?

Chris has pretty much hit the nail on the head. I’ve worked a lot with the homeless over the years, mostly street level but a bit beyond too. The vast majority of homeless I encountered had mental Heath issues or addiction. Sometimes both. In London a lot of the hostels are dry, so...

    Sweet Dessert Mead

Great video as always. Working away years ago my friend bought out a demijohn of mead he had made. Don’t remember much else.

What do you want to have on Bushcraft UK?

I quite like it as it allows me to acknowledge someone’s post without a “I agree” post. As I use the new posts feature I find it saves looking at a thread for a acknowledgement post. I also see it as a bit of a diffusion feature, where a disagreement has started I find liking the opponents...

What do you want to have on Bushcraft UK?

Whilst I’d hate to discourage anyone posting, I do prefer that people do a little reading/research on the subject first. We had a run of “why can’t I go live in the woods” and “why can’t I carry my 12 inch machete on the bus” threads a while back and I think the longer served members stopped...

What do you want to have on Bushcraft UK?

I’d be cautious opening up the photo option to all, full member status is not expensive and shows a degree of commitment and allows a bit of vetting too. I’m liking this current trend of linking older posts that are on the same topic, saves a lot of repetition. I still think BCUK is awesome...

Is a psk really needed in the UK?

Exactly, each to their own. I’ve had many a laugh when someone asks for a pen, torch, blade having previously given me some stick for it.

    Suspicious

My understanding is that the septic tank must be in good nick before the sale or the seller must at least put it right. Septic tanks come from a time when the family produced very little foul water, modern hygiene standards and domestic machines produce a lot of foul water so it’s important...

    Financial logistics

I take it you have digs in Scotland and spend most of your time there? If so, and assuming you are definitely going to sell your place get it on the market ASAP. Once your house is sold you become a cash buyer, which is a very nice position to be in. Most people are in a chain as they need...

    So.. what happened...

I joined in 2012 but had lurked for a while before that. I was 28 then, could spend my days off walking and working in the woods. Spent a while getting my kit together too. I now have kids and far less free time, we still get out to the woods but requires a lot more planning. I have all the...
