    Winter Moot 2020 - 17 - 23rd Feb

If you really were that curious and taken the trouble to click on the third link on my earlier post you would have seen that the good folks at NRW have provided various tools including very detailed real time mapping of flooded areas and river levels...

    Winter Moot 2020 - 17 - 23rd Feb

Alternatively, you could just follow the advice from the S Wales police who have declared a major incident and asked people to avoid all non-essential travel in the area as the emergency services already are at full stretch! ;)...

    Winter Moot 2020 - 17 - 23rd Feb

A “heads up” for anyone heading to South Wales in the next few days who have not being paying attention the the news. Like the rest of the UK we have been having a bit of weather and although the worst of Storm Dennis seems to have blown through, there is still a lot of water working its way...

    How's the weather ?

Winds easing off a bit here in mid-Wales but flooding more the issue - main A470 connecting north and south Wales is closed and the Wye is at record levels - we are lucky to be 800’ plus above it. The geography of the S Wales Valleys and 4” plus of rainfall means that they are at real risk with...

Not Bushcraft - socks, have they become less durable?

Congratulations on reaching the stage in life where nothing (music, cars, people, clothes, hairstyles, TV programmes, sportsmen/women, films, the weather, etc. etc, and, I’m afraid to say - you) is ever going to be as good as it once was. If it has not happened already, soon, advice from...

    Pi££ Poor Preperation

Here are the thoughts of the Lochaber MRT from their FB page which gives a slightly different impression from the guff in the DM! ;)

    Pi££ Poor Preperation

IMHO a perfect ending - a splash of publicity which will hopefully make others think twice about doing something similar, genuine contrition and humility from the miscreants and obvious gratitude towards their rescuers and recognition of a job well done by the Lochaber MRT. There is a world of...

    How's the weather ?

To get this thread back on track - stunning weather in mid-Wales this morning, blue skies, sunshine, a light dusting of snow and hardly a breath of wind. Off to the Elan Valley for a day in the woods. :)

    How's the weather ?

I think we are reaching more or less the same conclusion from different directions. I didn’t say that carrying full winter mountaineering kit and having the knowledge to use them should be a prerequisite for any trip into the UK mountains in the winter merely that it should be the default...

    Pi££ Poor Preperation

I hope the lesson that these four take from this is an understanding of risk management and how to undertake an effective risk assessment. The much maligned risk assessments should not be a box ticking exercise or a symptom of the “nanny state” or “elf and safety gorn mad” but an essential life...

    How's the weather ?

I suspect that Joss Naylor spent most of his time in the mountains in trainers (or wellies) but agree completely with your general sentiment. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2014/dec/22/country-diary-cumbria-iron-man-joss-naylor-wasdale?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other Too many people assume...

    Floods and Max Water Height

A bit of a random question - FWIW, I have a diesel Defender with no electronics fitted with a sealed snorkel (many aren’t) and axle, engine and gearbox breathers so with the addition of a couple of wading plugs it should in theory be capable if doing this! Would I do it - no and certainly not...

    How's the weather ?

Real four seasons in a day weather today! Clearing up fallen trees and branches after Storm Ciara with random blue skies and sunshine, rain, sleet, hail and snow.

    How's the weather ?

Hunkered down here in mid-Wales waiting for Storm Ciara to finish her little tantrum - looks like we have another 24 hours to go with 65 knot gusts forecast for later today. Fingers crossed but no serious damage so far a 5 minute power cut and just a few squirrel damaged branches down plus a...

    Holistic Homestead Energy Systems.

Did some work on reinstating some of these a few years ago - fantastic bits of kit just be aware that they are noisy old things to have anywhere near a house unless in a soundproofed box! :)

    Hares

Photobombing a hare! Just checked my trailcam over lunch after doing a bit of work on the whips I planted last year and found a whole load of hare pictures including a video taken an hour ago (the clock on the picture which is a still from the vid is an hour out) with the lesser spotted Nomad...

Sustainable Woodland Management Course - Elan Valley

By the time we finished the lathes, we only had half a day so just practice pieces - in my case, definitely more practice required! ;) Forget his surname but his first name was Wil.

Sustainable Woodland Management Course - Elan Valley

The roundhouse was built by participants on a Tir Coed course last summer and was used as a base for a pole lathe building course I was lucky to get on in the autumn. Although the TC HQ is in Elan Village, I think the actual course is nearby. Really looking forward to it - just need the...

Sustainable Woodland Management Course - Elan Valley

The syllabus seems to have disappeared now that the course has started. Hurdle making (or at least hurdle making courses) seems to be making a comeback https://hedgesandhurdles.com/experiences/hurdle-making-course/ and a relative recently went to meet her maker in one of these lovely wicker...

    Ramsoms are up

Oops sorry, for some reason from the utube vids, I had got the impression that you were in the south east or East Anglia but I now see that you are in “Mercia” although that kingdom does have somewhat nebulous boundaries. We are 1200’ so the growing season is a bit later and shorter here. :)
