    The Covid19 Thread

Are you seriously trying to suggest that evidence, facts, science, experts etc. are going to be as important in getting us through this as random opinions? ;)

    The Covid19 Thread

What I thought it meant was that as the body count mounted in Italy and elsewhere, the sceptics on this forum who a couple of weeks (and 400 posts ago), started from the position that coronavirus was no worse than season flu now seemed to accept that things were serious. Clearly, I was wrong. :)

    The Covid19 Thread

According to the BBC, a strikingly similar vehicle and trailer were parked at the entrance to Lake Bala in mid-Wales! ;) https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-51994504

    The Covid19 Thread

IIRC, the world renowned corona virus expert Harry Callahan had something to say on the subject! ;)

    The Covid19 Thread

“Community spirit” doesn’t have to mean a knees up down the old rub a dub singing along to Vera Lynn songs, it can take many forms and can involve less direct contact between people which right now is a good thing. I am lucky to live in a very rural community and most of my neighbours are...

Can you flush sphagnum moss down the toilet?

Now I’m really pleased that I never got around to ripping put the naff bidet someone installed in our house in the 1980s - never used it but nice to know it is there if needed. ;) #firstworldproblems

Can you flush sphagnum moss down the toilet?

IIRC, sphagnum moss is included in Sch 8 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 so under S13 it would be an offence for you (sorry your mate;) ) to collect it so hopefully its a hypothetical question. It should all be un the link below if your mate has time on his hands self isolating! :)...

    DIY latrine toilet seat?

Any simple plywood box and normal toilet seat or a commode type set up would be fine but if you have older people and/or those not comfortable with al fresco ablutions, a composting system based around a urine separating pan can be very civilised and are used in campervans, narrowboats and...

My blog. It even mentions Bushcraft!

Marc, rather than testing the Mods’ patience on here, the link below is a great portal (despite the name, it covers the world) for people wanting to share blogs of their overland travel adventures. :) http://africa-overland.net/Home

    Spring has sprung

Here on the hills in mid-Wales it feels like the longest autumn - very wet and windy but only a handful of hard frosts and even then, the layer of ice on the animal drinking buckets has been in mm rather than inches. First curlew heard this week as they return to their breeding grounds. Good...

Rag in a Can - Keep Tools Rust Free

Someone posted this video for making a brilliantly simple DIY tool for keeping tools rust free (and your hands safe) on a woodland management FB group - though it worth sharing. I’d not heard of Paul Sellers before but his YT channel has enough projects to keep a keen woodworker busy during a...

    A cracked Potje

Tony, Apologies - even with the ” ;) “ at the end, my reply to Santaman probably came over as a little less light-hearted than intended. I was really just trying to make it clear that I had no intention of getting drawn into another of those trans-Atlantic “my mum’s cooking pot is bigger...

    A cracked Potje

Santaman, Potjies of whatever size are a big part of South African (particularly Afrikaaner) culture and if you want to get into a pi55ing contest about the comparative size of US and ZA cooking pots, you are probably better off posting on one of the South African 4x4, outdoors or hunting...

    A cracked Potje

FWIW, below are the prices South Africans pay for their potjies - these are the top quality ZA made ones, the Chinese/Indian knock-offs are much cheaper. The current exchange rate is about 20 ZAR to GBP. https://bestduty.co.za/shop/ A 3 litre potjie is < GBP 30...

    A cracked Potje

A brand new 3 litre potjie is £45. £20 for a broken one is hardly a bargain unless you are confident about getting it fixed properly for free or very cheaply. Edit: If the potjie has a “3” cast into it, that is not its capacity in litres - see list in link in previous pist.
