    Celeriac is surprisingly tasty.

Totally love it as well. Grate it and lacto ferment it. Keeps for ever and makes a lovely remoulade or addition to coleslaw.

    45ltr (ish) day pack recommendations

Thanks Tiley, that was exactly what I was after. It's always hard to judge size from online pics. Actually compared the dimensions with my sabre, and it is actually the same, just taller. So I think I'll take the plunge once I've moved the sabre on.

    45ltr (ish) day pack recommendations

I do like the look of the savotta jaakari large, but just worried that it may be a bit too big as a day bag. Where as the medium a bit too small.

    45ltr (ish) day pack recommendations

Hi guys, I'm looking at getting a new, larger daypack to replace my karrimor sabre 45. Although it's a great sack, I just don't like the lack of support from the hip belt. I'm generally carrying for 2, so 45ltrs is about the right size for winter walks etc. Had a look at the fjallraven singi...

    What does you daybag contain?

Just out of interest, seeing as alot of seem to be carrying a similar set up. What sort of weight are people looking at. I just weighed my general winter day bag and it came in at 9kg. Granted, it includes a trangia 27 + 300ml fuel bottle and 2 ltrs of water (enough for 2 of us).

The Ultimate "What is this Fungi?" thread.

Have a look at Hairy curtain crust, Stereum hirsutum, see quite a bit around us, normally on dead trees. Seems to flush in quite large blooms. Not edible or with any medicinal uses I'm aware of.

Making Bacon.. and maybe some Duck Prosciutto.

Nifty. Got some bacon and smoked salmon in the smoker as I type. Also, after loving the duck prosciutto, am trying pheasant breasts. Leaving one plain and lightly smoking one. I really do love my cold smoker. Try smoking a load of basic veg, carrots, onion, peppers, garlic etc, drying them and...

Waterproof leather boots...how much to get a decent pair

If you want some decent, waterproof boots, look for something with decent, thick leather and no goretex type lining. In my experience, the linings don't last that long and can trap moisture between itself and the leather, speeding up the decay of the leather. Good footwear care and treatment on a...

are ridgeline monsoon classic smocks any good

I have the monsoon elite, thinner fabric to the traditional ones and I find it very good. I'm 5"10' and broad in the shoulders and the large fits me well, with space for layers underneath. It is very waterproof but, as it is a smock it can be hard to ventilate.

Is this a Bumper Year for Sloes?

It's one of the best years I've seen for a good few years in the west mids. And after last week's frosts, now have several ltrs of very sloe gin on the go ( leave it for at least a year. Last years just about ready). Plus some sloe and crab apple jelly.

    Chestnuts

Roasted and dried to make a flour. Also having a go at making some hummus after roasting. Just a heads up for anyone who's new. Sweet chestnuts must be cooked before consumption as they are toxic raw.

    Wild Vinegar's

Pascal has some great books, but he also does some amazing webinars. We've learnt a lot from them and have several batches of vinegars (wild and regular) that we use all the time (would never go back to mass produced now, as the flavours are quite fabulous).

    So much fruit

As with everyone else, such a glut here. Had a go at making some hedgerow jelly. 50% crab apple and the rest, whatever berries you can find. We used Haws, Hips, sloes, elder and blackberry. Simmered to a mush (30mins), then strained in jelly bags. The resulting liquid is then mixed with sugar...

    Ed Stafford Forest Smock

I have one of the newer ridgeline smocks and, surprisingly actually really like it. It's the thinner material, not like their thicker, almost fluffy material. So it doesn't hold the moisture like the older ones and breaths very well. Very similar the the Ed Stafford one, but, as mentioned above...
