I have one. I think I was given it so don't know the price. The metal is very soft, I don't think the edge is tempered at all, so whilst I did get it sharp once (after a lot of re-profiling) it lost its edge very quickly. Seems strong though - good for hammering pegs!

Yes I think so. Fishing or canoeing are good reasons, for me. Everday-wise, I only ever have a SAK or small Leatherman (non-locking).

Thanks Alan. You might have saved me a stretch at Her majesty's pleasure there. Has anyone on here been arrested for carrying a knife or axe whilst on the way to or in the outdoors? How did the police respond and deal with you?

With UK Knife Law being so restrictive on fixed/locking blades I was thinking of carrying my smallest hatchet (0.5kg head, 34.5cm handle) in my rucksack along with my Silky and SAK, that would see me through anything I need to do as I never actually fell trees - but am I legal carrying the hatchet?

The Husqvarna hatchet (the standard one with the heavier head) is good and cheap - can get it for about £25 from a few places.

I don't think it's worth it. The built in steel is quite small. The sharpener on the sheath is (IMHO) too small. Plus, it's cheaper to buy a decent sized steel (you probably have one already). Could epoxy a more useful stone to the back of the sheath or better still carry a small one like a DC3.

For 300gms, I'd take it. On canoe trips (obviously weight isn't such a big issue) I always take my Gerber Legend. Never really used it but for the innumerable 'What if?' possibilities I'd always take it. Also take a Mora Companion (heavy duty, orange, stainless) and Laplander saw - they do get...
