    Old Fashioned Truck Stops

Driving down from Scotland to the Moot, a stop off at Tebay was almost compulsory :) The carnivores filled up their coolers with good stuff for the week. I just had lunch and chilled out for a bit. £120 for a decent jumper isn't out of the realms of reasonableness these days. Compared to...

    Tarp teepee

I had one and gave it away to a friend's kids.....it's not really a comfortable or useful space. I honestly thought that a fishing shelter would be a better option. Like this kind of thing...

    Sarah Nelson's Grasmere Gingerbread

Bet you mind and try cracking it in three on your elbow though :D I have a recipe for gingernuts, a really good recipe. We were visiting elderly friends down in Buxton when my eldest, Jamie, still primary school aged, said to Joyce, "Would you like to give my Mum a birthday present ?", and...

    Sarah Nelson's Grasmere Gingerbread

Anyone else crack their gingernuts on their elbow and if it breaks in three pieces you get to make a wish ?? I was tiny when I was taught to do that....neighbour's big sister showed us how. My Dad laughed and called it superstition :rolleyes2: I still crack the gingernut though :D

    Advanced Survival course info.

Most schools seem to prefer that someone does their more basic courses before they tackle the advanced ones.....the understanding I have of it is that that way they have some idea of the capability, and the character, of someone they're going to be spending time with in challenging...

    Sarah Nelson's Grasmere Gingerbread

You know that rusks are really just twice baked sponge cake ? I'm wondering if this gingerbread might not be something along those lines. It sounds interesting anyway :D

    Sarah Nelson's Grasmere Gingerbread

@plastic-ninja If you come across the recipe, I'd love a copy please ? I like both shortbread and ginger :D....perhaps more importantly so does my Husband :D M

Miso with seaweed soup - what is the seaweed?

While we're on the topic though; there are no poisonous seaweeds....just avoid the blue/green or red tide algae....and the British Isles have a good variety :D From dulse and kelp to sea lettuce, laver and carragheen, they're all edible and tasty. The usual varieties in the Japanese/Korean...

Miso with seaweed soup - what is the seaweed?

There's a couple of types of this. Either it's broken up whole leaf (usually kelp of some kind) or it's sort of pulped and spread out to dry and cut into sheets and strips. If it's whole leaf bits then it 'writhes' in the hot miso as it swells up, the soup looks like it's boiling in the...

    Old Fashioned Truck Stops

I have to confess that though I have used both the Inchture and Strathcaro services/cafes, I am no fan. The food is substantial, the welcome is real, the prices are good, but the smell of fried food that clings to my skin, clothes and hair for hours afterwards puts me right off. They're both...

    The Iron Age Camper

If it's just for a talk, you could make a wee one.....just big enough for you to sit upright in would do. The small post hole arcs we know of aren't huge, can't mind off the top of my head, but four to six feet wide, iirc., for the smaller ones...they were just shelters, not houses, iimmc ?

    The Iron Age Camper

Why not do it right ? We know of arcs of small post holes....so use willow or hazel and pull them together to make a dome shaped shelter......like the pop up beach shelters. Weave a couple of rows of willow/whatever to create a dwarf wall. If you double that up (like the inner wall of the...

    Making Sauerkraut

I add lactic acid powder to my sauerkraut. It makes the nutrients more 'available' to the gut apparently. I think it adds to the taste and it seems to speed things up a little too. Sandra (Way out West) uses the contents of a capsule, but the powder's easily available here.

    Thoughts on Premium Bonds

We spoke of this not long since. I reckon contentment is a great wealth. I think it's a state of mind, but then by nature I'm an optimist. Life can be stressful enough; why make it harder ?

    Service Charge - Enforced Tipping

Irks me. It's creeping Americanisation of waiting staff's wages, I reckon.

    Thoughts on Premium Bonds

Y'see, we are fiscally prudent. We don't do debt, we paid cash for the house, that kind of thing. We're not rich, we live simply, we live within our means. We're quiet, practical people and we don't only do PB's. I don't do the lottery. I did buy premium bonds, and so far the returns have been...
