    Caledonian forest

Had a brief stroll through a Caledonian forest in the Cairngorms yesterday. I was absolutely blown away by it. Seemed to be mostly spruce, larch, Scott's pine, with an understory containing plenty of bilberry among other things. I found penny buns and chanterelle withing minutes of being there...

    Toaks siphon setup

Well I've had time to give it a test. 500 ml water (at 15c) boiled in 8.5 mins, on 20 mL methylated spirits. Seems reasonable I think? Flame was fairly yellow though, and sooted my pot. What I didn't realise is that methylated spirits is not the same as methanol. It's not something I'd really...

    Toaks siphon setup

I thought I'd share this little setup, for the stove tinkerers among you. It's a toaks titanium siphon paired with a cheap mini wood stove. I've inverted the wood stove, with the toaks siphon resting on the floor. My 750 mL lixada pot then nestles happily on the inverted base, offering...

    Folding Bushcraft Knife??

I'll give another recommendation for the TBS boar folder. It has become my go to for carving, I find it very comfortable and I like the blade length. I have average sized hands, I would say if you had mallets for hands it might be a touch small.

Can steer it in that direction, by all means.

    Paddle advice

Great points thank you. I guess the decathlons will therefore be well suited to the hardshell, and our existing ones which came with the inflatable and actually slightly longer, can stay with the inflatable. Sorry, yes, it is kayak paddles that I am after.

Also this 5 segment decathlon paddle looks interesting https://www.decathlon.co.uk/p/kayak-packraft-paddle-carbon-plastic-adjustable-separable-5-sections-195-215/_/R-p-337851

    Paddle advice

A question for the canoeists among you. I'm looking to upgrade our three-piece aluminium paddles at 1140g, and cheap kids rubber dinghy paddles. We are two adults, two kids, who are both getting to the point of needing proper, feathered paddles rather than the plastic single bladed dinghy...

    Vietnamese knife

I never have as much time to post on the forum as I'd like, however, I thought this was worth sharing. I've accumulated a fair number of artifacts that have sat in my family over the years. I've rescued them from oblivion really; I attach more value to old and interesting objects than other...

    guy line tensioners

Has anyone used a clam cleat set up in reverse, for a tent guy line? I.e. a fixed loop on the peg, and the adjustable loop passing through the attachment point on the tent? Advantage would be you could easily tie off to something such as a branch or stump of heather, while still being able to...

    Ready meals

That's a good find. Compares very favourably to the wayfayrer boil in bags in terms of calories, and a bit cheaper too. I find the wayfayrers tasty but a bit on the greasy side, which makes my stomach feel disquieted. So I'll be trying these.

    No right to roam.

Maybe I should clarify my earlier comment. Just because I've not felt restricted in terms of access, doesn't mean that others feel that way and that I think 'the rules' are ok. Having said that, I dont know where the lines should be drawn in terms of land access. Clearly the fight for access to...

    No right to roam.

I had a thought which surprised me somewhat: I've always been envious of Scotland's light to roam. My stomping grounds are the lake district, peak district and Snowdonia. So I've tried to think of examples of spots that I've wanted to roam, but haven't been able to due to restrictions - and I...

    No right to roam.

My thoughts are that demonising one side or the other doesn't help matters, and in real life, we're not so easily divisible into 'urban people' or 'country people' and so on. But we do live in a culture that encourages devisevness. There's a common denominator to the problems afflicting the...

Bushcraft tools that could be classed as weapons?

I think I'd quite enjoy seeing two people trying to fight with trangias. I guess you could wear them as helmets?
