Government consultation on banning large knives and machetes

Meh... I honestly don't see a massive difference between someone wanting to do things the way that Klingons or Hobbits do and someone who wants to have the skills of a Saxon or Viking. As long as they're doing it without annoying or threatening anyone else.

    Quail prep

Here's a question... Is there a different species of quail that's common in the USA or is what Americans call quail somehow otherwise different? I ask because using US recipes for quail, with UK butcher bought birds always results in burnt offerings, I'd say that realistically you need to cut...

    Seasoning TJM kit

Bought myself the TJM Fire Anchor to go with the Arinn Firebowl I got on kickstarter. Does seasoning over open fire work okay? I've a good collection of cast iron but I've always used the oven to season them. My concerns would be the effect of smoke and direct contact with the flames. Any...

    Toothache.

Whiskey, or any hard spirit. Both in the way you would imagine and also if you just hold the spirit in your mouth around the offending peg. Also, and hand on heart I've had relief from this. Place ice or something else very cold in the web between your thumb and the other fingers on the hand on...

    What did you buy today?

Not today, but this week. 1980s (ish) vintage German Army sleeping bag. The one with the arms. Almost purely as a nostalgia item, I slept around most of Europe and on so many ATC camps in one of these in my teens. It's in beautiful, near new condition but is different in some significant ways...

    Knife Postage

The problem is the Offensive Weapons Act 2019 and how various couriers choose to interpret it. In non legalese, if you send a sharp or pointy thing by post or courier you must undertake to ensure that the person you're sending to is over 18. The tricky part is that the service you use to send...

    Has anyone ordered from medievalcraft.eu?

In answer to my own question... Yes, they just have a convoluted ordering process which requires manual acceptance of payments. A bit odd perhaps, but would be easier if I weren't using a one-time card number to pay myself. All entirely legitimate and above board.

    Pine Resin

The short answer is no really, once it's rosin it's past being useful for this particular task.

    Has anyone ordered from medievalcraft.eu?

Suffice it to say they're currently annoying me, having tried to make an order. Has anyone worked with them? Is their ordering process always deliberately obtuse?

    Fire Dragon Fuel

They're crud in my experience. Easier to light than hexi though. I use them in my crusader and that silver folding thingy that also takes the crusader cup. Strictly heat the retort meal and make a brew with the water stuff.

    Pine Resin

It has to look like it belongs to a roughty-toughty viking chap. I've about 3kg of rosin in various forms, no matter what you do with it, it doesn't look right.

    Ever burned yourself Bushcrafting?

Might not be bushcraft exactly, but a good few years ago now I was cooking on a charcoal grill on Birkenhead beach. Knocked a couple of coals off the front and just automatically reached out and grabbed them both. Remember running to a pub and straight into the the gents to run water over it and...

Does anyone have some raw pine resin they'd flog me? Not the processed clear stuff. You'll also need to be in it happy to post to NI.

    Hi from Brittany, France

Hi! Can I ask whereabouts in Bretragne? I intend to head to France for my retirement (few years yet) and despite the fact that my ex is Breton, it's one of the the regions I'm considering.

    Shiro Wat

I've had a discussion recently with someone about pease porridge, same thing? I seem to remember that I decided to try it, but the sketchiness of that memory and my absolute failure to recall who I had the conversation with may indicate that a snifter or two had been had. Will look into it.

    Shiro Wat

It's an Ethiopian savoury porridge, made from chickpea flour. I did it from scratch during the week, easy to do and very tasty. But I've now ordered a kilo of preseasoned mix for it, which it strikes me might be a handy base for a dahl like curry on the go, it cooks a lot quicker than whole lentils.
