    Which folding saw?

I started with a Laplander and, don't get me wrong, it's a great saw. But then, someone recommended a Silky and I haven't looked back. I like the fact that it cuts on the pull - it adds to the feeling of pecision and safety when making a cut; I like its impressive sharpness and I like the range...

Most durable/long lasting waterproof jackets (without maintenance)

It seems to me that there is no one ideal fabric or jacket. Given the weird and varied range of conditions that we experience in the U.K., that is understandable. Add to that an individual's tolerance or intolerance of fabric and cut and one can understand the insuperable challenge confronting...

    A luxury and a book...

My mistake! Assume that your hygiene essentials, along with any prescription medicines, are included in your kit. That said, I do remember that the NOLS in America teach their students how to dispense with Andrex and use two sticks instead...!

    A luxury and a book...

Here is the scenario: you are heading out into the woods for a month; you have all the 'necessaries' with you in your rucksack, that is to say - something to sleep under, something to sleep on and something to sleep in, food (including brew kit), water bottles and means of purifying, clothes and...

If there is one piece of kit that’s gone, you could bring back what is it ?

Yeah, but not with Cobmaster or Karrimor Annapurna packs attached! I have recently returned to an external framed pack and it's brilliant: light(-ish), strong and versatile. Sometimes, modern takes on old ideas can be thoroughly worthwhile; at others, the old ideas simply can't be improved.

    My DIY weekend

Wonderful work! But, with so many items made by you, it's a minor miracle that you also find time to use it all! What's your secret?

If there is one piece of kit that’s gone, you could bring back what is it ?

For me, it's the Vista Windlite jacket. Mine was fibre pile with a poly/cotton outer. A great cut and immensely versatile. I know there's Buffalo et al using pile but I would not be happy sitting by a fire wearing one of those! The Windlite was very hard-wearing but, even so, I did manage to...

    A great night's sleep

Things I've found help me are as follow: - not being too hot; ideally, warm and dry - sleeping in my hammock. Obviously, that does depend on having trees nearby! - not eating too late and keeping alcohol. intake to a socially acceptable minimum. - reading a novel - being...

    Savotta Kahakka 10l.

It most definitely is! Pricey but worth it, as far as I'm concerned.

    Savotta Kahakka 10l.

I recently took delivery of the larger, 25 litre version. I've given it a bashing up in the Highlands and am rapidly coming to the view that, for me at least, this is as-near-as-dammit the ultimate day pack. Quality design, materials and manufacture all help but it is the sheer practicality of...
