Hello folks - Beginner bow drilling

Ps I still had the notch opposite me simply because I knew that hearth was working well. In future I will cut the notches on my side.

Hello folks - Beginner bow drilling

Thank you. I’m chuffed to bits! That’s really kind of you, but without meaning to sound ungrateful my ultimate mission is to go into the woods in summer and start a fire with nothing but my knife. I’m sure your piece of fired clay, which as you say is a natural product, will work perfectly.

And bosh! Just like that! A new spindle collected this morning, first go, an ember that had me contemplating calling the fire brigade! I am literally over the moon! Cannot thanks you folks enough!

Hello folks - Beginner bow drilling

Thank you. Blimey, I really am a dimwit at times. On other threads I’ve been able to post pictures from my Flickr account, but for some reason it won’t let me do it anymore??

Hello folks - Beginner bow drilling

I just rewatched my own video and now that it has been mentioned I can see that the cord is definitely rubbing against itself. And now I can see what you’re saying. If I twist from the other side the line going under is on my left of the spindle, whereas the way I have been doing it the line...

Hello folks - Beginner bow drilling

Thank you for taking the time to do that. I am very grateful. But in all honesty I still don’t get it. If I twist the spindle in the opposite direction to my video, the drill is upside down. Unless you are left handed? I’m starting to feel embarrassed about this. Everybody has been so kind to...

Hello folks - Beginner bow drilling

Ps I have also realised I need to have the notch facing me (as I think one of you mentioned) otherwise I think I am having to guess when to stop and I’m stopping too early. I need to be able to see my ember.

Hello folks - Beginner bow drilling

Ok chaps I’ve just had three more attempts and you are all 100% correct. I have been rubbing string against string. I haven’t changed the way I wrap because to be totally honest I can’t see how I can without putting the spindle on the inside. (I can be pretty thick at times!) However I did watch...

Hello folks - Beginner bow drilling

Hi again just checking: If I wrap the spindle the other way, does that not put the spindle on the inside of the cord? I thought that was a no no?

Hello folks - Beginner bow drilling

Funnily enough I was wondering about that. I remember as a kid a fellow made us kids a swing with genuine parachute cord. It was no more than perhaps 8mm thick from memory and we would sometimes have two kids at a time swinging in it. There is no way the stuff I have would be up to that.

Thank you. Hopefully it’s the final piece of the jigsaw.

Hello folks - Beginner bow drilling

This is what I suspected. I know that I can use plastic strapping, which you couldn’t possibly break by hand, to cut itself just by using another piece of the same stuff like a toggle saw. I’ve got to be honest and admit that despite thinking this I can’t really grasp how it’s happening, but I...

I’m not really sure tbh. But thanks for responding.

Hello folks - Beginner bow drilling

Hi, no not yet, but I will order some and give it a try. The thing is though, everybody recommends paracord. It’s pretty tough stuff but after a couple of goes the outer coating splits in the middle of the bow cord. I then remove the outer coating and have another go with the white inner cord...

Hello folks - Beginner bow drilling

Sorry, I’ve only just noticed your reply in coming back to this thread to update. Thank you for the tips. I actually headed here to say I’ve hah probably ten goes at it and only managed to raise an ember once, and that got stuck in the actual indentation in the hearth board. I think because I...
