Its strikes me , reviewing this thread , as a species we tend to look to over complicate things. If you were at my house and I offered you a sandwich and I came back through the door with a Hawaiian 16" deep and crusty - I think we'd both know one of us needs a word with ourselves in front of...

I think anything that has a bread like basis with veg, diary, or meat inner. I would caveat that I 'think' that any heavily process reconstituted meat ( Hamburger ) is moving into Burger territory. That being said - Koftas in Pita would be the fungi equivalent between plant and meat. So ...

Reasonable question. I want to say ( until someone points out the exception ) that maybe its a cold vs hot meat thing ? But then Cubanos and Reubens are served hot - but thats unprocessed meat. So maybe a "burger" is minced processed meat served hot.???

The jam and cheddar ( Dairy and fruit ) thing I do get - lemon curd and soft cheese is gorgeous , like a 5 second cheesecake. Salad cream and crushed crisps - also I get - textural component that sandwichs often lack. Needing some crispy / crunch element. I'll try the Cabbage thing.

I agree keeping it simple can be a good call , and agree nutrient barren white bread is the way to go. I'll be interested to see what others suggest - maybe a few far flung sandwich combos from across the seas with more esoteric ingredients. Sandwichs seem to be found in all parts of the world

And the most important part is you look Pioneer-chic whilst doing it!! I agree that older buildings have character -but the trade off is running costs and comfort levels.

I do keep coming back to the idea of liking four poster beds with drapes. Getting medieval on d'em.. The Japanese heat room by room which makes alot more sense. The Old school central europeans still have a propensity for large central Masonary heaters. I see alot of architectural type...
