    Metal detectors

Minelab Vanquish 340 is what I ended up with after a great deal of research into decent but budget. I haven’t read a poor review of them, they’re fairly simple to operate. In honesty, anything more than this for a newbie is overkill. I have a friend with a Garrett and he spends more time...

Not sure of how member privileges work, but at the bottom of the message box is and Attach Files button. You may not have this, in which case you’d have to use a third party hosting site like Flickr.

    Hot camping wood stove modifications

I’ve got a FireAngel in the van because I run a diesel heater. The diesel heater pulls air from outside and vents the exhaust outside, but it’s sounded a couple of times when I’ve fired the heater with the sliding door open and it’s detected the blowback into the van. Worth having, and very...

    Making Sauerkraut

Awesome on burgers too, something about the light brining and pickling takes the onion flavour down a notch and makes it lovely and crunchy. Wish it was still easy to get Monterey Jack, occasionally find it sliced in Lidl but gone are the big red bars on the cheese counters. Gone are the cheese...

    Making Sauerkraut

Off topic, but these are very good, not worth another thread but very yummy in cheesy wraps etc. https://elavegan.com/pickled-red-onions/

    Making Sauerkraut

It’s really lovely until the tub slides out of the campervan fridge and it gets into the carpet. That took months to stop stinking. I had a go recently at the sauerkraut. It was ok, I put a lot of garlic and dill herb in it, but I do prefer a pickle to brine.

    Making Sauerkraut

The Vadasz stuff? It’s lovely, the garlic and dill sauerkraut and a decent pork pie are a champion combo.

Yes, the VC2SL is the one I have. You can slam NiMh in it too and it’ll recognise them. Nice feature is it’ll go gentle on smaller batteries or those at low charge.

Nkon also stock a fair few, the Keeppower are supposed to be good. I wouldn’t worry too much about protected cells. The protection circuit is to prevent the battery running below 2.8V, they don’t like being fully discharged. That’s the only protection you get, and it can leave you suddenly in...

Trip Report Pine forest Permission Camp

I didn’t say detail, I used black bud/opposite branching as an example of recognising Ash, and pointy buds for Beech. You took it into detail by asking about Oak flowers and lenticels. You’re talking to yourself mate. I’m keeping it simple with recognition of easy features.

I’d have said Fogstar, as I have a couple of them driving Emisar torches. Fogstar increasingly aren’t carrying many of the odd sizes just as torches are starting to use them more. XTAR have a good rep over on BLF, both the chargers and batteries. I wouldn’t buy re-wraps, unless it’s from...

Nice one, good you got him going with a relatively easy first fire start, he knows he can do it now. Douglas Fir makes great fatwood, really resinous stuff.

Trip Report Pine forest Permission Camp

Yeah, but that’s not really the point is it? I know my trees already, but as you said in your previous post, get to know the important ones. It isn’t ’just is’, you have to learn them, and you do that by familiarization. Like, Ash has opposite buds, they’re quite large and black. Dead leaves...

Bud shape/size/colour. Whether it branches alternately or opposite (like Ash). You’ll readily recognise a Beech bud as they’re long and pointy and you’ll be wiping tears from the eye that got stabbed by it :D A Winter twig ident was also something we had to do. While you’re out, go and look...

any suggestions for a decent tent?

Another recommendation for the Vango Banshee. Prices have risen considerably I’ve just noticed, I reckon it’s because of the D of E approval. I got mine for £99 at Blacks a couple of years ago. The 200 has door each side, vestibule for boots or stove, zipped bit at the end so you can stow more...
