    Hammock Tips & Tricks

Don't let the bug net drape onto toes or forehead or you'll get bitten there Don't use the channel end of the hammock for suspension cord, it creates more wear, best use a whipped end or XL zip-tie/soft shakle through the channel and prussic the whoopies onto that Keep tree straps away from...

    hammock with silver lining

I've made a few reflective underquilt protectors like that but not the hammock body itself. I can't say I felt much difference hung as an UQP, hard to determine especially given that they were either low breathability or non breathable so needed lots of venting to avoid condensation. They worked...

    Hammock hanging, gap distance

28 feet is a long way but I think with a structural ridgeline and whoopies it'll work with the tree straps at about 9'. It'll put alot more strain on straps, whoopies and ridge-line so maybe use 4mm dyneema. Occasionally I've had to span larger gaps and used a stick to push the tree straps up...

    Poncho - Tarp - Hammock

I agree that it's too heavy being that my jacket, tarp and hammock with suspension weigh less but I bet its a great bit of kit to live in your kit bag or car to be used as a tough bit of reserve kit when things break, are forgotten or circumstances change. They're UK based and British made...

    Waterproofing a homemade tarp

The 3' wide stuff (occasionally 4')? that's no good I'm afraid, tried it and leaked like a sieve! There is some of the MOD ripstop that I use for hammocks (5' amd 1.3oz/y2) that will work, easily spotted as this one is shiny, I've no idea if that's a parachute material though

    Waterproofing a homemade tarp

To make a decent waterproof tarp from nylon ripstop you'll need a tight weave. This is easily tested by trying to force your breath through it, sealing you lips on the fabric. Unless there's a significant impedance to you breath going through I wouldn't bother TBH.

DD Frontline or TW Green Hornet

Winter hammocking without decent lightweight down quilts, top and bottom, will weigh more but it's pretty easy to get lightweight while hammocking in the UK and still has the benefit of getting you out of the sludge and melt as it's rarely very cold here for long.

Tall people - how do you find short sleeping mats?

Finding a right width pad that's the correct length is a major PITA and I'm nowhere near your height. One thing I did find useful is getting a large thick inflatable pillow and use that above the pad (rather than on it) which will earn you 10cm+ in length

Bargain material find - can I use it for hammock?

I've used the 1m wide fabric before, it's a loose weave so he careful sewing the hammock channels as they can easily rip out, I'd use a whipped end TBH. I've bought lots of the 1m wide as it's great for mock ups, prototypes etc At 5'8 I'd go for a 10'6 hammock, if it'll fit under your tarp

pondering insulation for a DIY underquilt

Having made a few under quilts I think there's only really three contenders: climashield, primaloft (silver is easier to build with) and down. Thinsulate is more suited to high compression areas like boots and gloves. Climashield and primaloft are really easy to to sew together into a basic...
