You Know You're A Bushcrafter When...

When you find yourself looking longingly at every patch of scrubby, litter strewn ground in town and know you've got Woodland Withdrawel symptoms. When you spot the litter in said patch of scrubby ground and think, I could make a ... out of that. When you hear yourself say "Hello" to the moore...

    Denatured Alcohol

Its a bit before my time, but to buy meths in Scotland you used to have to sign a register. But that's a wee while ago now... The trouble with the mineralised meths available in the uk is that the minerals (whatever they are) clog up a Trangia's burner holes. I used to buy denatured...

    beautiful moments

Taking the dog for a walk this evening with snow gently falling, and trying out my new camera. Not exactly recently, but seeing a fawn in a thicket just a few feet from the path; and rainbow sparkles from water dripping from moss on a hillside. Oh, and remembering last night to have a good...

    DIY Hammock Down underquilt

These are looking realy good. I like the way you just knock them up in an evening. How do you keep the down from getting all over the place? Does the silver coated material add much weight? Would the design be easily adaptable to a Hennessy asymetrical? Really need something toasty on the...

    Protect leather from scratches

Try adding carnauba wax: its what makes car and shoe polishes hard and shiny. Perhaps it could be melted into snoseal?

Do you forage for edible Fungi?

Caught the habit from my granny who learned from necesity during WWll. Have also done one of those short courses in mycology. I also don't manage to get out into foraging areas nearly often enough, and my one and only attempt to grow some failed miserably. Favourites round here are parasol...

    Are there urban beekeepers here?

We keep three colonies of bees and neighbours can be, shall we say, problematic. It seems we are not alone in this: http://www.thecourier.co.uk/output/2009/09/18/newsstory13804743t0.asp Don't expect neighbours to welcome your initiative, even if so called urban beekeeping is becoming more...

Fur on the Inside or out?

I think some reindeer hides are impregnated with silicone for waterproofing and fur retention.

    Spain Way Hey!

Hiya, We're off to sunny sunny Catelonia for a wee spot of hammocking and mooching about. We don't have a fixed plan, but will be flying into Gerona tomorrow, taking the bus to some wooded hills, then the sea and ending up in Barcelona. We'll be using a Trangia but are not sure what the...

Its been a while now and you've had some time for reflection, Barney, as well as the benefit of other's thoughts on the matter. How do you feel about saying 'no' to the lad now?

    Kilner jars are back

We use the type with the wire hinge, glass lid and rubber seal. They just go on and on. Wasn't their manufacture shifted out to China or something? Thanks for the headsup.

    Silver ?

Silver has also been incorporated into fabrics for similar reasons e.g., hospital fabrics for helping fight MRSA, see http://www.qmc.nhs.uk/newsdesk/pressreleases/2008/02_Feb/050208.htm or smelly feet, see http://www.sweatguard.co.uk/silver-socks/silver-socks No connection etc...

British public footpath system - are we lucky to have this?

Last summer I walked and hammocked with my partner in the Swiss mountains. The maps are first class and the signposting amazing. You get the location name and altitude as well as distance and time to walk to the next place. The scenary was alright, too.
